How are ratings calculated?
To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average. Instead, our system considers things like how recent a review is and if the reviewer bought the item on Amazon. It also analyses reviews to verify trustworthiness.

3.0 out of 5 stars Jumped about too much

I would have given this more stars but it jumped about from the 40's to the present day, why do authors do that, can't they just tell a story as it unfolds in chronological order. I read a book for relaxation & I don't want to keep having to think when something was & who it was happening to, having said that it was a nice story.

3.0 out of 5 stars Half way through ad struggling

I bought this book because of the reviews but now 47% through it I’m struggling to finish probably hoping it would get better . I like to be engrossed in a book almost immediately but found this so confusing with all the characters and different time zones .

I wanted to like this book after the good reviews and I did get to the end to see the outcome but I'm so tired of books that jump back and forth in time. Trying to follow the three generations in this story was too much like hard work for me in afraid.

3.0 out of 5 stars Overly dramatic and formulaic but readable
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 14 September 2019
This plot is in two halves: events that happened in 1945 and the repercussions in 2014. The writing takes us from past to present and back again with frequency.

The plot is a little dramatic at times and the author has even used descriptive formulaic outside weather storms to reflect interior stormy scenes, with rain lashing down and chilling temperatures.

Rebecca is an only child who lived with her parents and most notably, a father who suffered from PTSD. She was in the house when both parents died a sudden and bloody death. In 2014, Rebecca’s estranged daughter gives birth to a granddaughter. Jessie, like her mother, suffers from familial psychosis and she runs from the hospital with her sick baby. The plots neatly mirror and coalesce as the story concludes.

Without any spoilers, I found this novel rather challenging to digest as the events seem at times unrealistic in their repetitive nature. In short, I found the plot tightly drawn but implausible. Nevertheless, to give it its due and putting the plot aside, the novel is well written and readable.

3.0 out of 5 stars I really wanted to love the book!
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 8 September 2019
There are many interesting themes touched upon in this book: husbands able to institutionalise wives so they can get a divorce; broken families; tumultuous relationships. However, I felt these topics were touched upon, but not really focused on in any great, interesting, depth.
I found myself skipping paragraphs of writing just to move the story along - especially the chapters focusing on Jacob. I found the chapters set in the past riveting, Harriet didn't give every dry detail of each minute, but the chapters set in 2014 felt a bit dull and slowed the story down. I found the chapters that didn't have a name as the heading, to tell us who's part of the story we were looking at, a bit of a cop out. Once it was finally "revealed" it wasn't really a shocker and would have left me less confused if we had been told who's viewpoint it belonged to in the first place.
There was one reveal that I hadn't expected and it did actually make me gasp as I was genuinely blindsided by it. Not enough to make up for the slow pace though.

3.0 out of 5 stars Slowly Winding Story
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 10 October 2019
A slowly unwinding tale of generations plagued and healed by suffering as a mother and baby disappear from hospital.

Time is short to find poorly baby Elizabeth and her mother who is suffering post-natal psychosis. However, the key to finding them lies two generations back and only a sister can find it.

The first quarter of this book is rather confusing for the reader to put together the characters, relationships and timelines. Once beyond that it settles into being an engaging story.

The plot of this novel is interesting but difficult to follow. I had to reread chapters to make sense of what was happening.
