4.0 out of 5 starsThe white cat be my favourite 😉
Reviewed in Australia on 18 October 2020
I have to be honest in saying that I struggled to read the first half of this book and it wasn't until about 80% in that I was actually like "this is getting interesting, things are actually happening" and it got a bit more action packed and the story actually started coming together.

The characters didn't mesh as well together as previous books of Sarah's but they were still cute together. I'd honestly like to see Aidas come into the picture because when I read his first scene, the only thing I could think about was that they need to get together lol.

When everything came to fruition and the story actually got interesting (about 90%), I thoroughly enjoyed myself when reading this book.

I guess it depends on if you think it's worth reading the majority of the book before it gets better but you never know, you could enjoy the entirety of the book.
I'm undecided whether or not I will read the next one, so we shall see you when it comes out.

2.0 out of 5 starsThere's good and bad
Reviewed in Australia on 11 May 2020
***Spoilers***

Look, this book was ok. It's got some great things that are on parr with the bad. I liked the first 2 ToG books, as well as the first 2 ACOTAR books (hated that Christmas special that was marketed as a 4th book). DESPITE THAT I would say I am a Maas fan. I read anything she puts out as she has some great writing moments.

Now onto CC.

It does seem like Maas is incapable of writing more than one character type. This book is literally what would happen if Cassian and Feyre/Caleana hooked up and had cellphones. No there isn't really a reason why someone who has been hung up on his lover's memory for over a century has gravitated to Bryce - other than she's hot. Bryce is basically like the other two main characters of her other books - females with attitude who become OP and more powerful than anyone else at the end of their books.

And let me guess - if we're going to follow Maas storylines, we're going to find out that Bryce is supposed to be with Aidas, the most powerful male, and not Hunt yeah? That's what I'm guessing the sequel will revolve around. Bryce being some sort of hell (sorry Hel) queen

I'm not sure that I'm the only one annoyed by the narration - there's a reason why not many of these third-person/omniscient POVs that jump around from character to character in the same scene don't get published in modern day. The narration style reads as messy, disconnected and lazy. I think this, and the fact that Maas writes the same characters/plot lines is why I rated this book down.

The last Part of this book is the best, but how they narrated this part through watching her on camera, that was a bit of a stretch, another reason why this is rated down. If I could rate this 2 and a half, I would have selected that, but this leans toward 2 more than 3 stars. Very slow build to a good finale (even with the weird fact that they can follow all her movements on some sort of drone).

I won't say I found elements of the plot/crime solving predictable like some other reviewers claimed, because I didn't predict everything here. Fantasy in modern day I think was also done well.

I would say it's a good plot, good world, driven by classic character-types that Maas favours with very messy narration. The friendships in this book are touching and for this element, I will read the next one, as I thought the bond between Bryce, Danika and Lele were done the best.

House of Earth and Blood features, but is not limited to, the following themes:
○ Adult fantasy
○ Fae
○ Angels
○ Paranormal
○ Urban fantasy
○ Enemies to lovers
○ Slow burn romance
○ Murder mystery
○ Friendship

My overall rating for House of Earth and Blood is…

5 Stars!

Sarah J Maas is the queen of explosive revelations, epic plot twists, spine tingling battles, swoon worthy, slow burn romances and gut wrenching loss. This was a reread of House of Earth and Blood and I'm still reeling from the intense storytelling Maas weaves. I adored Feyre in ACOTAR, loved Aelin in ToG but Bryce was something different. Bryce built me up even as she did herself. Her selfless soul truly rubs off from page to skin. The side characters are so compelling, you can't help but connect with them as much as you do with Bryce. The entire mystery behind the tale is ravishing and the way each unparalleled revelation is revealed just brings goosebumps to my skin. Truly unforgettable.

5.0 out of 5 stars A TERRIFIC read!

The plot is action-packed and never, ever, predictable!
The lead characters are complex and intelligent adults. Even the minor characters are well drawn and believable. Their fates and trials moved me to tears at times.
The setting is an intriguing blend of a modern society with fantasy creatures and magic. Both human, humanesque and demonic Evil exist, and clash, spectacularly.
The heroine is the best adult, imperfect, nonmoralising, fearless, independent, real woman l have encountered in any fantasy novel. Forget MCU pale attempts and the rest! This is a novel to inspire strong women to be themselves and to step into their own power. Envigorating! Ground breaking.
Wish l could give it 10 stars!

Another thrilling series from Sarah J Maas!
A more mature read than COTR and TOG.
There is a lot of history, world building and lore being laid down in this instalment, I confess initially it felt like a lot to take in, it felt like information overload and at times distracted me from the main story arc.
That settles down mid book and it flows beautifully.
Sarah takes you on an emotional roller coaster that will turn your heart upside down and spit it out the other side.
The last half dozen chapters had my heart in my mouth and my adrenaline racing.

Thank you Sarah for yet another world and characters to fall in love with, you never disappoint.

4.0 out of 5 stars Push through the first few....

Take a breath and plow through the first muddy, menu-like chapters with firm reading boots on, because once you are on the other side, and have your fantasy head on, House of Earth and Blood is a roller coaster of all things awesome. Bryce Quinlan is everything you could imagine a true hero to be; stubborn, sassy, intelligent, loyal, and yet, incredibly broken to the point where ‘anti-hero’ is at times a more fitting description. We garner drips of insight into her backstory as the narrative progresses, sometimes in bursts, through photos, through sentimental items, and yet the whole time feel there is no way in Hel you would want to live in Bryce Quinlan’s shoes working for a shady antiques dealer aka sorcerer, or face the things she has faced. But at no point is there self-pity or entitlement. Without a shadow of a doubt, Bryce calls to anyone who has faced horror and continues anyway, anyone who is broken by guilt and self-doubt, yet gets up and keeps going. Her resilience is what’s needed in contemporary female characters, and Mass hands it out in spades. Hunt, likewise is richly drawn, to the point where even his darkest moments are incredibly redeeming, justified poetically by the situation he has created for himself, again without self-pity or blame. And there is just something incredibly sexy about a man who takes full responsibility for the predicaments he finds himself in. But, in truth, it is love and vulnerability that hums from every page of this book that keeps the pages turning at rapid rates, despite and in-spite of the grim scenes of charred bones and flesh dripping. Crafty tension management enables three key climaxes to be built and whilst this only swayed off course twice (ending in some book throwing), it’s the metaphors, hints, riddles and social class commentary that wraps you up in a gentle heart beat based on key cornerstones of the human-condition. You’ll find yourself rushing to the end, snorting with laughter and anticipating some dashes of raunch to find a perfect resolution that only whets the taste for what’s to come from Crescent City.

Even though this book is almost 100 chapters long there's no time for it to drag or get boring, with twists and confusing and oh my gawd heartbreaking turns it was hard to put down and do adult things like earn money but then I remembered earning money means I can but more Sarah J Maas books so yay! :p
This is a standalone at this stage so you don't have to have read any of her other stuff and finishes on a mild cliffhanger - can't wait for the next please please please!

It took me a little while to believe in Maas’ new world. But her detailed but always page turning writing, complex characters and rich world got me totally into this book. The worst part of reading this is I’m now up for a years wait for the next book. We’re lucky Maas is such a prolific writer.

Thank you for the latest world, and a story with good people whose only goal is to care for those they love and right the wrongs caused by the bastards of the universe.

Love it!! Read and listened through audible. I've just finished it too! I'm completed taken by this story and holy moly can't wait for the next one. Yes it was hard to get through the first half only because of all the detail and world setting (had to read and listen a few times over) but by the end im now in love with this new world and really wish book two was out yesterday. SJM has yet again created a world for a brilliant saga. We'll worth the read and thank you SJM.
