3.0 out of 5 starsPlodding and repetitive
Reviewed in Australia on 22 April 2020
A personal tragedy linked to police corruption are the basis of this police procedural. There are several deaths, illegal immigrant workers, and one determined police officer determined to get at the truth about her own past and its links to the present.
The pace is rather slow with a lot of repetitive description of inner thoughts, personal habits, police officers’ suspicions and suspicious police officers. The characters never quite came alive for me and I persevered to what was a predictable conclusion, with some space left for a sequel.

4.0 out of 5 stars Gripped from the very first sentence!
Reviewed in Australia on 28 January 2021
When the first paragraph of a book starts with “He was going to die tonight. But that didn’t slow him down. His death might have been inevitable, but a primitive urge to flee kept his legs moving” you know that it this is going to be one heck of a good story!

Book 3 of the DS Karen Hart series starts with such a gripping hook, and that momentum continued throughout the whole story, that I couldn’t put it down until I finished it. Like all good detective stories there were twists and turns, but one of the best things about this story was a major reveal for an ongoing storyline that started in Book 1. For that reason alone, I recommend that you start with Book 1 and 2 first, because they are not only great stories, they give context to this one.

I was pleasantly surprised and really appreciative that the Author not only gave us a really good crime to solve in this book, with interesting characters, but also chose to resolve an ongoing storyline and not stretch it out to further books. Though we now know key information about a major character’s back story, we also know that this isn’t over yet in terms of ongoing storyline, and as such, can’t wait to read the rest of the series.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Really Good Read

This is the third in the series featuring detective sergeant Karen Hart but it is not really necessary to have read the other books but I would recommend you do as they are all excellent. When a man's body is found Karen and her boss DI Scott Morgan start to investigate they find there is much more than they expected including people smuggling and police corruption. I really hated having to put this book down and enjoyed every page.
