4.0 out of 5 starsWorth a watch

This movie has a typical Australian cinematic feel - set un rural Australia, it features quintessential working-class blokes who think a village member who left to go to the city to work is a sell-out. It features the detrimental effects that a mob mentality can have when mob judgements of others are based on personal bias. It was very enjoyable but like everything Australian made - it's all from the male perspective - men feature front and centre. The women in it are perceived as victims, as suspicious or as something to be desired.

Very disappointing. Over-written metaphors and a lack of understanding of rural communities - the author insists on fields and barns instead of sheds and paddocks. There’s no school bus. Then, the perpetrator of the murders is very easily guessed. I’m usually hopeless at guessing the perpetrator but I picked this one easily. The film is marginally better despite Julia Blake’s lack of an Australian accent and some very confused geography. I expected so much more of Jane Harper.

5.0 out of 5 stars Well worth watching

I really enjoyed this movie. Having read the book, I wasn't sure how the complexities of the plot would translate onto the big screen, but they have done a very good job. The characters are well rounded and the acting is very good overall. My only quibble is that the denouement seems rushed to me, but overall, it's well worth watching.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Aussie film

I clocked this movie, as first time ever I saw one with critics giving 100 out of 100 points. So, watched it at last and it didn't disappoint. Eric Bana and John Poulson are of course very recognisable and great actors but the supporting cast is excellent as well. The local police officer stuck especially in mind. Cinematograpghy is punchy, really bringing home the sunburnt landscape. I loved the juxtaposition of this majestic, dry, indifferent stage, where the rich and messy human story was playing out.And the story itself - not going to say anything here, you have to watch it. But the age old human issues are explored in a heartrending way. This one stays with you.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great Aussie Crime Fiction

"The Dry" has been adapted from the book by a very talented new Aussie author, Jane Harper. The story came to my notice on searching Eric Bana on IMDB. I had 2 thoughts: 1) Gotta see this film, but, 2) Gotta read the book first. The book was a tremendous read, and the film a superb adaptation. Congratulations to all - 1) Jane Harper for a superb piece of crime fiction, and 3) All involved in the film production, especially the cast, particularly Eric Bana, who anchored the film beautifully. Hopefully there will be more adaptations of Jane's books, particularly "Force of Nature" with Eric back as Aaron Falk. Cheers, Andy C.

I’d read the book, but didn’t recognise - or didn’t remember - the plot. The country town setting, some of the characters and a prolonged drought are all here, it’s just that I seem to remember the plot in the book was much more complex. Admittedly it’s now some time since I read the book, and of course things have to be simplified and characters and details omitted to make a viable film script. The acting, especially Eric Bana’s, was fine and the cinematography excellent.

4.0 out of 5 stars Superb outback mystery.

'The Dry' is a beautifully shot and acted mystery set in an outback town during a harsh drought. City police detective Aaron Falk (Eric Bana) arrives back in town after twenty years for the funeral of his old mate Luke only to find that Luke's murder suicide is not as simple as it seems and that the rancour of the drowning of a teenaged girl that drove Aaron away in the first place has not abated. Accomplished director Robert Connolly gets the best out of a talented cast while the setting and music (including an aching rendition of The Church's 'Under the Milky Way' by actor Bebe Bettencourt) evoke the sombre mood most effectively. Highly recommended.

Eric Bana is outstanding in this role of a policeman returning to the suffocating small country town of his youth (and its tragedy), after a tragic event involving an old friend.

With many twists and turns exposing the aridness of drought and suffering around him, he finally gets to the bottom of it in a spine chilling finale.

Great supporting roles by fantastic actors Jon Poulson and Irish/Australian Genevieve O'Reilly who bring the depth of their long and storied careers to these roles.

Well worth watching and deservedly one of the most seen Australian movies in history now.

4.0 out of 5 stars Beautifully shot, interesting storyline but lacked something

Always love to see the Australian landscape captured so beautifully. This story came with the usual litany of local critics wanting to crow about the brilliance of Australian film production but as is often the case, the product didn't quite match the hype. The story had potential and was interesting enough, however, it just lacked a bit of scripting polish. It seemed to meander along for 100 minutes before suddenly wrapping up with the usual twist - but the ending was rushed and felt more like a movie that was told it had to wrap up within two hours so the ending was hastily tacked onto the end. A shame as it had potential for more. Overall, worth watching - but could have been better.

I actually rented this twice to try and get through it. But still could not. Left it with still over 40 mins to go.
Did not do the book justice. Even Eric Bana, whom I normally like, seemed disinterested and the tension of the book was just not there.
In fact some of the minor actors put in better performances. Maybe if I had not known the outcome I would have stuck it out but as I did, it was just not worth the effort.
Eric's performance in Dirty John was good so maybe it was the director and the screenwriter's fault!
