But where are the really good editors who slash and burn and recreate the work into an excellent book? Thus is what this book needs. The skeleton is there and needed to have some good muscle attached.

Such a delightful read. A perfect blend of romance and tension and second chances. Who wouldn't want to visit France's lavender fields after this!!!

Was not as good as I had hoped, especially after an interesting start. Yoo long. Too drawn out. Ending obvious.

It's one thing to have a good story, and another, to make it work. First, I felt the story was rushed, the timeline not an amble but a hastily-written jumble of characters. I found 'Del' annoying for a woman her age and someone who had had responsibility in her work environment. Perhaps the author should have drawn that out a bit more - how IVF can absolutely be either a blessing or a nightmare. This then would explain her fractured image.

Second, another timeline problem: buying the house, staying, going the next day to the brocante and hey presto, a week later - perhaps? - you're in bed with the gorgeous Fabien. Oh, and who are these two best friends and their hastily written back story.

Last, and this is a small but equally annoying issue. When asking amazon to download a sample to see if you'd like to read the rest, in this book, all you get is the table of contents. A bit of a cheat.

It simply doesn't work that way in France, even down to planting the lavender. Her research is a bit flimsy here for one who has other books which are a joy to read.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful.

It may have only been six weeks since Del and Ollie moved to France for a new life, but they’re already packed up ready to head back to Blighty. Yet, as Del stands watching the doors to the removal truck close and depart for home, she realises this isn’t the life she wants, nor does she want Ollie. And so she decides to stay put and make a go of life in France.

She may not know much of the language, she may not have any income, but she has the house, set on an old lavender farm, and she has determination to make her French dreams come true.

Del quickly makes new friends who help her along the way. Little does she know, she’s perfectly placed for helping them too and soon, Del’s life is very different to how it used to be.

It’s taken me a few days to write this review, I devoured this beautiful book in just over a day and have been in mourning ever since. I’m finding I can’t get into any other books just yet, it would seem another wonderful Jo Thomas book has ruined my reading mojo.

I miss all the characters, I feel like I want to watch Del thrive and grow in her new environment for just a little longer. I want to see the progress being made on rejuvenating the lavender farm. I want to spent more time with Stephanie, Rhi, Alain and Fabian.
I want to sit outside Henri’s cafe and watch the world go by with a glass of wine. This book most certainly brightens up a few hours and I highly recommend it to anyone. It’s the perfect summer read.

5.0 out of 5 stars A delight!

This novel is a delight from beginning to end! I have never been to Provence but I now feel as though I know exactly how it feels – the warm sunshine on my face, the mistral wind sweeping through from time to time, the scent of lavender hanging in the air, and best of all – the food! I long for a bowl of moules marinière, boeuf bourguinon, a freshly baked baguette or flaky croissant. And I want to taste the exquisite lavender cookies the heroine bakes in her farmhouse kitchen. Add in courage, kindness and new beginnings, plus a seriously dishy Frenchman who seems to know exactly how to lend a helping hand when it’s most needed, and you have a perfect story! If, like most of us, you can’t go travelling right now, then this is the holiday escape you need!

4.0 out of 5 stars A pleasant, easy, romantic read with a touch of social reality

Del has barely unpacked before her husband, Ollie, decided his dream of living in Provenance is more hell than heaven and they should go home. As their belongings are loaded into a van Del realises she has nothing she wants to go back to. They sold their home, she left her job, her hopes for a family have been shattered and whatever she once shared with Ollie isn't there anymore. Refusing to get into the car she watched Ollie drive away and walks back into an empty house.
The house was a lavender farm and this book evokes the smells and warmth of Southern France. Del isn't on her own for long and receives help in establishing a new life from a variety of locals. The village also has a number of ex-pats who tend not to speak French and prefer to form their own clique.
Provenance is not all beautiful scenery and lovely meals though and Jo does introduce the problems of houses being brought by outsiders and existence of a social underclass.

5.0 out of 5 stars Super, as always with Jo Thomas.

Very much a story showing how a determined woman can survive on her own. Del and Ollie make yet another move, this time to France, where they buy a crumbling manor house. Ollie has only pictured the sunny side of life, drinking a glass of wine on the lawn, entertaining friends round a huge kitchen table. When none of this happens, mainly due to the fact that he does nothing to improve the property, he packs up and stomps off back to England. Without Del.
Her life begins to burgeon after finding a wonderful recipe book in an antique shop run by the delicious Fabien. She works at setting up her own business and becomes more and more part of a community.
I loved this book, especially as I had lived in France for many years. It brought back many memories.
Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for a review copy.
