5.0 out of 5 starsOutstanding Technical Merits.
Reviewed in Australia on 29 July 2021
If like myself you watch films to also appreciate the various skills on display you will find 1917 a very rewarding experience. The technical merits on display here are first rate including three Academy Awards for cinematography, visual effects and sound mixing. Your eyes and ears are truly treated to a visual and aural feast. This reviewer found the cinematography in particular was first rate. It’s also not a spoiler to state that this is NOT an action war film, it merely tells a tale that could take place during any stand off that has occurred throughout the centuries between the different races of humans.
The Blu-ray presentation of this film is also first rate with outstanding picture and bone rattling audio that will impress anyone with a decent home theatre setup.

2.0 out of 5 starsForgettable
Reviewed in Australia on 11 August 2020
It was a forgettable film that I struggled to finish watching. The characters were not at all interesting or engaging. The story wasn’t particularly compelling. Another disappointing film as compared to quality pay tv mini series and series productions. There were all sorts of oddities in the film. To be honest I’ve forgotten most because it was so forgettable. But I did wonder why a soldier volunteer his mate for a mission? Also, given it was pretty unusual in WW1 in the British Army for corporal to have a brother who was commissioned, why add that detail? Given it was unusual it was either worth explaining or, absent that, better not being part of the script.

Enjoyed every moment as it was never boring. There are a lot smarter people making movies these days and so much more is known abou the craft than even 15 years ago. Movies before then were often dull - this one never.

5.0 out of 5 stars Why do we live?

War becomes a metaphor in this well made movie. It is taught, well scripted with excellent cinematography. Hang on to the Kipling quote- Down to Gehenna or up to the Throne, He travels the fastest who travels alone. This movie applies it to a war scenario. The narrative is similar to Apocalypse Now. More compact and less Hollywood. Well acted. I was left numb at the arbitrariness of it all. Caprice lurks everywhere whether there is a war or not. Raises the question - what is the sense of life?

I’m not a fan of war movies but was encouraged to watch it because of the cinematography and the story of Sam Mendes’ grandfather whose real life tales were the inspiration behind the script.
The film was touching, moving and harrowing. Beautifully shot and directed. The acting was great.

3.0 out of 5 stars nice cinematic shots, great computer generation of effects however a waste of time

For what was supposed to be an 8km trek, the sets changed so much it looked like they changed countries each time. And that scene where he is chased through ruins - no one could shoot him when i could have thronw a rock and clobbered him. Let alone how they suddenly couldnt find him. As i said in the headline, nice cinematic shots and effects but about as likely or realistic as a Teddy Bear wins WW2. I think some of the actors must have either been totally ashamed they did this movie or they have no clue what war really is like

5.0 out of 5 stars Powerful movie

If you hate movies that glorify war, then you need to watch this one. This movie highlights how ordinary men, can do extraordinary things in the face of adversity. This is the story of accidental heroes, mate-ship, courage, sacrifice and selflessness. We watched this with a teen age boys and you could have heard a pin drop. They were glued to the screen from start to end. Bravo - what a brilliant film. Not for primary school kids but teens OK.

Great story about the loss of life, psychological effects & political motivations in war and its utter meaningless. Actors were great, story line wonderful. realistic warfare and special effects exceptional. Highly emotive and made you feel so very, very sad. Highly recommend this movie.

Great way to really portray the scale of the land as well as not allow the audience a respite during the tense moments.
I was on the edge of my seat when <redacted due to spoilers> was outside the cottage after the <redacted due to spoilers> down, and the man <redacted due to spoilers> after they rescued him from the fire. So pale.

This is a great movie about the haunted wasteland left behind by the Wermacht as they consolidated their lines in 1917 in an attempt to wrong-foot the offensives planned by the Triple Entente. It follows two englishmen and their struggle to deliver time critical information to front line troops in the process of falling into a terrible trap.
