5.0 out of 5 starsUnmissable. Heartbreaking. Insightful. BUY THIS BOOK!
Reviewed in Australia on 4 April 2020
I’m just over half way through this book but I couldn’t wait a moment longer to leave a 5 star review.

This is a book for the ages. A masterpiece of contextual thinking. One that makes you feel everything, think differently about everything and bask in the genius and sensitivity of the literary delivery.

I learned about Glennon on Brené Browns podcast, which was beyond interesting, but contained only really a glimpse of her deep insight and inspiring humility.

This book is a collection of stories, metaphors and musings that could not be more relevant to the current socio-cultural climate.

I am learning, growing and feeling deep grace with every page I read.

If you are sitting there trying to decide whether to purchase this book - you must! It is an investment in yourself, your family and your role in the future of humanity.

Thank you Glennon for such a groundbreaking piece of work. 🙏🏻

I only read the book for bookclub and I found it's hard to believe that it has such good online reviews. I appreciate the honesty of the author sharing her lifestories and the interesting angle for the beginning of the book, but the book itself seems lack of content. The structure of the book reminds me of reading these inspirational book. It keeps repeating the same thing in different formats throughout chapters. The language was dull and prosaic.

The book gets a bit dry towards the end. Could not hold the whole purpose/ book together as the author wanders around for a goal towards the end of the book.

Glennon explains what you’ve known but not been able to put into words about yourself. Then gives you permission to explore...untethered.

I have never heard of this author and the promotions were fantastic, so I expected something amazing. Look, some great thought processes, but.... it just didn't get my interest or teach me anything new. And I found the writing so overly enthusiastic I felt like I was at a multi-level marketing rally. Having said that - it is entirely my perspective and I guess other people will need the message. I gave it 3 because it does have some important messages.

3.0 out of 5 stars A book length, Mom's version of an Instagram 'inspirational' meme feed.

I have been shivering with anticpation waiting for this book: that angry, authentic, deeply female voice from Love Warrior turned up a notch and set free to roar because she's writing about finding true love. And more of Glennon's gorgeous voice and writing. But, for me, this book does not deliver. The 'keys' format totally dilutes her voice, it's stilted, it ironically does not allow her to really let loose, and there's only a few places where I felt I could hear her true unvarnished and unmanipulated words - and these places are so obvious I'm sure they ring like a bell for other readers too. I can feel them like a vibration in my bones. But, sadly, I think a too-clever editor ruined this incredibly important moment and convinced Glennon she needed the self-help gimmick to give the book structure - for me, all it does it turn the whole thing into a book length, Mom's version of an Instagram 'inspirational' meme feed. I adore Glennon, and Abby, and everything they do on a daily basis to help others by living their totally authentic and brave lives, but this book, for me, didn't capture any of that. I'm sad.

3.0 out of 5 stars Didn’t match the hype for me...
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 8 June 2020

Before starting this blog I’d never heard of Glennon Doyle before, then came to learn she is Abby Wambach’s wife and it pricked my attention along with all the hype it is getting.
————————
It touches on a variety of subjects aside of her own experiences such as divorce, sexuality, blended families, raising children, racism, activism, spirituality, feminism, addiction and mental health.
*
Glennon tells the second half of her story in her latest book, in a way that is quite raw and honest. Whilst also acting as a self-help book. For me part 1 and 2 came across a little preachy and I didn’t feel I learnt/was enlightened much by its content throughout.
*
I have to say that Glennon and Abby’s story does pull on the old heartstrings and is a fairytale in some respects, which I appreciated and enjoyed.
*
All in all not a bad book, yet not one I’ll rave about to others. However, it is a book full of energy and passion in the authors writing, a bit of a rallying call (for the right audience).
—————————
Key take aways:

- What is most important is what you think of yourself and being the best version of you (that you can be)

- Pleasing others doesn’t always lead to pleasing yourself

- Pain can fuel revolution (change)

- Form your own values rather than those set by social constructs

- Life isn’t easy but it sure as hell can be worth it, by focusing on what you want it to be and letting go of fairytales and expectations

3.0 out of 5 stars Some stories were inspirational, plenty felt like fillers

I bought the book after having heard Glennon in several podcasts, and finding her message very inspirational.
For me, the book was mixed. There are certain stories that really tugged at the heartstrings and showed the point of becoming untamed, claiming one's own future, daring to be wild and unapologetic.
However, some other stories felt like fillers and quite weak in comparison, and watering out the message and the strength of the book. Also, the stories were in an unexplained order (not chronological, not really by topic) so it didn't really feel like I'm going on a journey with the author, but rather hearing disjointed snippets and suddenly the book is done.
It was a good pastime, but I won't be reading it again.

I bought this book because I had read about it in the press. First half I found moving, emotional and I respected Glennon for ending her toxic marriage and finding love with Abby. Her story will inspire others.

The second half I really struggled with. Her parenting tips were a little bizarre and I am sorry but no one has the conversations she has with her kids. It didn’t feel realistic. The second half felt more like a collection of essays on key topics and was hard going.

I am glad I read it because now I know what all the fuss is about.

3.0 out of 5 stars Not really groundbreaking

This is a series of anecdotes which explore the nature of current womanhood, examining the roles women are expected to play, how to bring up children with a better sense of social justice and dismantling gender roles. In that respect, it's interesting.
But..... I just can't get past the fact that this is pretty basic. I don't know, I just didn't learn anything new. If you're approaching it as a blueprint for a way to live your life past these constraints put on women, I just don't think it delivers. It's like a marshmallow - pretty yummy, but over quite quickly with little to remember.

Okay. Full disclosure. I didn’t know that Adele had “bigged” up this book. I bought it a long while ago as an impulse buy when I was feeling a bit needs and book buying seems to curb that feeling. I started reading it not really knowing what to expect. I thought it was fiction. I bought it because I thought the cover was pretty. Kudos to the person that designed it.

I did not know that Untamed was a memoir. I did not know that it was a book about having a positive mental attitude. I think I came to Untamed a little bit unprepared.

Untamed is a good read. Glennon Doyle is a great writer and manages to get her point across. I did feel much more positive after reading it. I don’t really think there is much more I can say about it than that. I am glad it has found an appreciative audience and I did like it but it wasn’t a book that changed my life the way it did Adele’s.

What I will say is that certain chapters – those on race and sexuality really did leave a lasting impact. For those chapters alone Untamed is worth reading. The rest of the book is just a bonus.

Untamed by Glennon Doyle is available now.

3.0 out of 5 stars Some great sections
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 3 September 2021

This book is one I read slowly and I started to enjoy it a little more after hearing Glennon recite sections of it on a podcast with Brene Brown. The tiger section is particularly excellent however some others such as 'giving up' on her second child and letting them go to town on screen time annoyed the heck out of me. I found some parts very, very preachy in tone and this is not a compliment. I was about ready to give up on this when she was on Brene's podcast and that was the reason I returned to finish it. I think most people seeking out books like this are on the journey to living a whole-hearted life and so Glennon's aggressive tone of writer's voice irked me a LOT.
I think 3 stars is very fair.
