5.0 out of 5 starsEnthralling

This is only the second book that I've ever given 5 stars. It was compelling reading, making me lose track of time and very reluctantly having to stop only when I was so dogtired that I couldn't make sense of what I was reading. I finished it in two sessions and now wish that I had read it more slowly so as to prolong the pleasure. The whole series has been excellent and this last book has been the topper. Hope there are more to come.

2.0 out of 5 starsIs it just me?

I've read a lot of Baldacci books and I am always eagerly awaiting the next one. I've read the Camel Club series, King and Maxwell, Robbie, and Decker.. but this was disappointing.

The dialogue and plot progression was almost childish. It felt like the book was aimed at 12 year olds.

The climate change mantra was just annoying.. leave it out!

The ending was unbelievable.. facts never implied or disclosed prior suddenly emerged, the whole thing tied up with a ribbon on top.

It feels like the author was writing to a formula and basically just "phoning it in".

Maybe I've been spoiled by my recent forays into John Sandford and John Connolly.. I don't know.

Overall, I'll be thinking twice before buying the next Baldacci book.

What can I say, just terrible, rambled on, easily the worst in the series, never had me at all, no real suspense, ordinary plot , not much action and always saved by the bell just to keep the storyline alive, I’m definitely no critic technically but couldn’t even read the last few pages, just glad that’s all there was left

2.0 out of 5 stars Seriously bad sadly

Not nearly as good as his other books. Very disappointing and quite ridiculous plotting. I’ve read all his books and enjoyed most for an uncomplicated ‘turn your brain off relax’ that we all need from time to time. But this was dreadful. Dump the awful Alex Jamieson - she scurries around asking inane questions and making silly school girl remarks - she is appalling. And why bring Will Robbie in as well - he comes across as a pretty thick muscleman, which in his ‘own’ books he is not at all.

You can do better, David

So disappointed

Let’s begin by saying that I am literally obsessed with the Amos Decker series by Baldacci. I wait every April for his new book release. But this one left me furious at times, bored at others, and overall confused in between.

Before I go any further, I must mention that my husband works in the oil industry and has for 20 years. So when I read up on what this book would be about, I knew it would be oil field trash at its finest. Sure enough, by chapter 2 Jamison was horrified by the burning of gas off of wells. She wondered out loud if a paycheck was worth the environment. Well, Alex, you just rode on two airliners and drove an SUV (for two people) for an hour to get to YOUR paycheck, so I wondered the same thing. Rainbows and lollipops don’t fuel planes or vehicles. That bit of hypocrisy bothered me much, but hey, it’s just a book. I’ve much respect for Baldacci, so I continued.

There are about 4 different plot lines, which I could get through. But what bothered me the most was that Amos didn’t feel like the same character. Baldacci has been careful to craft such an interesting character, but failed to really put his star player in the game.

Lastly, I almost put the book down for good when I read this line from a character: “It violates the Geneva Conventions and opens up American soldiers to” basically being tortured by TERRORIST groups. Yes, because ISIS and Al Qaeda have morals too and really respect the Geneva Conventions. I work with many US Veterans that served in Iraq and Afghanistan that would surely disagree with this.

Overall, this book was a fail for me. I hope that the next Amos Decker book will focus on him and his amazing capabilities and shorten the focus on just a couple of storylines so we can get quality and not quantity.

2.0 out of 5 stars Could not follow the plot.

I gave up less than halfway through. The "plot" is so ludicrous and convoluted, it is impossible to remember who is who, and why you should care. Every time I put it down, I would start reading again, and wonder whether I had actually heard of several of the characters. Seriously poor writing.

2.0 out of 5 stars Where has Amos gone

As a big lover a follower of this series, I was really disappointed in the character deterioration of Amos Decker. There wasn’t much reference to the “Memory man” we grew to know and his conditions of seeing colour and remembering everything was almost none existent in this book. Not a bad read but felt like a basic book now the character has dwindled.

2.0 out of 5 stars One of the worse books from David Baldacci!

I am a huge fan of David Baldacci, I collected all of his books, however this book had disappointed me deeply.
- Too many cases in one location
- Jamison who was the Journalist recruited by FBI supposedly very good at observing , analyzing , a good FBI agent should be. However, in this book she was quite useless , all she did was asking all the " Wrong Questions "
- Robie, 5 out of 5 stars career assassin could not even take down a Honda ( chapter 85)
- After the Honda took in so many shots also lifted off the ground , the driver and the passenger were still able to walk out of the car without a broken bone! How's that possible ?
- The construction of this book was far and away from David Baldacci's style which was like a jigsaw puzzle , this book was a mess, more like someone started to tell a complicated story yet didn't know how to end it! liked chapter 84,85,86.
- Amos Decker has lost his style or shall we say his trademark, he had appeared to be ordinary!

Did not like the writing style. Decker's sidekick Jamieson is fairly passive and useless. The classic plot where the bad guy drugs the good guys who wake up tied up then escape easily is used. Why doesn't the bad guy simply shoot them?
Don't bother with this one.

This is a plodding story that makes no use of the key character’s unique feature - his unforgettable memory. The author even drags in two characters from another series perhaps in an attempt to prop it up. While the other stories in this series were engaging, this one is flat, not recommended.
