This film is one that I am really fond of. Leaving Las Vegas has many warnings of how alcohol can dominate a life. Can make someone self destruct and fall from grace. Nicolas Cage gives a fine performance as the man who goes to the bright and dazzling arena of Las Vegas to drink himself into the grave. The situations the character finds himself in are all trademark, alcoholic experiences. Becoming lost and embarrising to in public bars. To being washed up and alone in a swanky hotel. The fact that the character Cage plays so well meets and becomes emotionally involved with a lady who is all part of the Las Vegas scene at first seems a positive move. But the drink does not leave any good future tidings for Mr Cage's character, and any relationship which develops soon hits the rocks. A Fine Film and some excellent acting.
Figgis adapts and directs to perfection. Elizabeth Shue is surely the finest of all the good time girls (And should have been more amply rewarded at the Oscars). Cage is so brave, so brilliant and unrelenting in his adherence to the truth of his terrible alcoholism. It takes no prisoners.
yes a good film. very sad about a young man who is a alcoholic due to his wife and kid leaving him. decides to go to las vegas to drink himself to death. then he meets a prostitute falls in love but decides to keep drinking shes ok with that. would recommend .
Harrowing stuff. Nicholas Cage plays a brilliant part. The emotional and mental connection, chemistry and bond between Cage and Shue is electric, pure unconditional realistic love which is not focused or based on sex despite Shue being a high class hooker.
Leaving Las Vegas is alcoholism extradonaire, pain, isolation and honesty, two people caught up in waves of self destruction.
Ironically the author, John O'Brien committed suicide in 1994 just weeks after selling the movie rights. The film was a semi-autobiographical story. Director Mike Figgis completed the film as a tribute.
fantastic film , cage is stunning and without doubt its his career defining acting all round performance , shue gives a quite brilliant performance to .if you haven't watched the film your certainly missing out on a fabulous production , the subject for .obvious reasons is a bleak .venture but from the start its an engrossing plot and would be up there with many classic films I have watched cage deserved his Oscar without doubt first class all round .
A truly adult film in its theme of a drunk entering a downward spiral. The Las Vegas setting is just a backdrop and can't compete with the emotional displays of the main characters. I tend to think of Nicolas Cage as a one dimensional actor, even though I've enjoyed the films he's in, but this is for me is his masterpiece. I have watched it numerous times and am always emotionally involved by the characters, the secondary characters aren't always believable, but the interaction between Cage and Elisabeth Shue is phenomenal.
It's a gritty, honest film, which doesn't hold any punches and to be properly appreciated shouldn't be watched whilst doing anything else. Put some time aside, turn off your phone, dim the lights and be prepared for an emotional event - it won't be for everyone - it's not a romantic comedy, even though at times you can laugh and it is romantic in a bitter (not sweet) way. It's life as seen when you're two thirds through a bottle of whiskey and you know that you haven't finished yet.
Not only would I recommend this film only to adults - but only to adults over 30, as hopefully nobody younger will have had enough experience of 'real life' to empathise with this 'shot' of life.
