5.0 out of 5 starsLoved the premise of this book so much
Reviewed in Australia on 13 September 2020
I loved the premise of this book so much and I loved reading it even more! This is the perfect book for anyone who has many (or any!) regrets in their life.

This is "Sliding Doors" on steroids - what if you could get a sneak peak of what your life would look like if you'd made just one decision differently? Maybe it would have been a thousand times better. Or maybe it wouldn't have been...

3.0 out of 5 starsIt was just OK
Reviewed in Australia on 30 November 2020
Love the premise of The Midnight Library and how well constructed the concept of it is, but I just didn’t care about Nora!

For some reason I could not engage with her character at all and wasn’t bothered where she lived or if she lived. Sorry, I probably sound like a heartless brute!

That said, I needed to know how things panned out so I finished the book and found the ending sweet. Even for a heartless brute.

1.0 out of 5 stars Predictable and falls down fast

Started off ok but then became so boring, repetitive and predictable. Forced myself to finish it in the hopes the ending would be something interesting but it's exactly what you think it'll be. Main character was irritating too. I had high hopes for this based on the reviews but it was a waste of my time in the end.

1.0 out of 5 stars Always read the one star ratings before purchasing

Note to self: ALWAYS read the one star reviews before purchasing a book. I'm not going to write a a detailed review of this book- it has all been said before. What a waste of my time. From now on , If there is a common theme running amongst the one and two star reviews , I am simply not going to waste my time and money purchasing said book. I am tired of all the hype around a lot of books these days , enthusiastically blahing on about being an international bestseller etc. etc. A must read blah blah blah. I have been let down too many times . This was another one of those let down times.

1.0 out of 5 stars Couldn't wait to get out of the Midnight Library

I had been intrigued by the premise & beautiful concept of the story. I generally buy books if they have been reviewed by 'The Times' if I am unfamiliar with the author. I thought 'Library'... yes! I love libraries! What an interesting concept!

I saw the title of the author's book '5 reasons to stay alive' & thought this author is worth exploring - I hadn't (& haven't) read any of his previous works - '5 reasons' was going to be the next in line after I finished this one...I saw all the glowing reviews!

But oh , did I get the choice of choosing & buying this book, ' The Midnight Library' wrong.

I was so disappointed by the whole story - I just couldn't identify with Nora's lives. For example, I found the way she questioned her loved ones about trying to work out where she was in the world irritating & just so unbelievable.

Eg. in one life, she is with Dan & they are married. They own a pub in an English village. She has 'reappeared' in this life and is trying to work out her 'place' ; looking around the pub for clues. They begin a conversation about trying for a baby - she says to him "We're trying for a baby? I want a baby?' - um, what?

I didn't get the librarian character - all knowing, all seeing and then I just got confused at what she was trying to imply & guide. I just kept seeing in my mind's eye a 1970s dressed old ex-schoolteacher-ish lady with an old fashioned hairstyle and big round glasses trying to 'guide' me through 'my life'.

Sorry, this is a book I just wish I did not buy & wasted $25. It's the type of book to borrow from the library, read it, return it. I learnt nothing from it. I am giving my copy to the charity shop.

1.0 out of 5 stars HUM DRUM
Reviewed in Australia on 18 July 2021

The excitement with which I first commenced this book quickly gave way to a profound sense of ennui as my knees buckled through the pages to the bitter end. An exhilarating prospect for insight and wisdom through an unencumbered look at the past was replaced a garden variety ho hum purported homage to the human condition.

1.0 out of 5 stars Trite and disappointing

A promising premise turned out to be ‘All you need is love, love…love is all you need.’ Instead of reading this book, I’d suggest watching Love, Actually. At least there’s music.

This book started with a surge of being a great book...it gradually deteriorates into one of the worst books to buy and read. I do no becommend it.

I couldn’t let my child read this because of the suicide theme. I was disappointed this had been suggested for children.

1.0 out of 5 stars Seriously bad
Reviewed in Australia on 9 March 2021
Confirmed my strong distaste for Matt Haigh. Maybe the book will appeal to extremely multi-talented middle class women who turn down all the ridiculously amazing opportunities in their lives, but most of us are starved for opportunity, not regretting ones we said no to.

1.0 out of 5 stars This book was not for me
Reviewed in Australia on 1 August 2021
I have to say this book was a huge disappointment for me, everything started out fine but as I got to know Nora the more I disliked her, the other characters to were completely boring. I can't say I liked any of characters in this book. It just got to the point where I just thought to myself why am I still reading this and called it quits, I didn't finish it, and I'm ok with that.

1.0 out of 5 stars Great idea, poor execution

After reading the sample I had downloaded, I was completely hooked and bought the book immediately. I found the description of the state of mind of the heroin compelling and convincing. However, 2 chapters later, it was already clear what the morale of the story was going to be, and unfortunately, it was conventional and lazy writing.
***SPOILER ALERT***
The heroin goes from one life to the next realising slowly that, after all, she is important and her life is good and that she does want to live. Admirable sentiment but has been done tons of times before. What could have been a nuanced story about the human condition became a predictable, boring plot. It's a shame, it could have been a fascinating story.
