Kingdom of the Wicked is my first book by Kerri Maniscalco and it definitely won’t be my last. The way everything was written, the descriptions, I honestly felt like I was in Sicily. Everything just flowed and there are no over the top explanations or descriptions, just enough to leave you wanting more.

I won’t give too much away but this is perfect for the spooky season. A witch looking for vengeance, dark and deadly Princes of Hell, murders, secrets and lies around every corner. Who will you trust?

My favourite parts of the book, besides the delicious food, was watching the slow friendship and building of trust between Emilia and Wrath. They were both hesitant of each of other, Emilia more so after being told numerous scary stories about the Princes of Hell, but after spending time together Emilia begins to see that not everything she’s been told about them are true. And the slow building romance was intoxicating, I wanted, no need more!

3.0 out of 5 stars Not as good as expected

There’s been so much buzz about Kingdom of the Wicked on tik tok and Instagram so I was expecting great things from this book and was a bit disappointed. The premise is good but it just felt a bit…meh.

Too much detail in some parts and not enough in others. I felt like Emilia and Wrath need fleshed out a bit more. Emilia is hard to connect with as an MC because her personality seems to be very flat. Her two personality traits seem to vengeance for her sister and doing the opposite of what Wrath asks. I had fo reread several parts of the book as the plot would jump so quickly which was confusing at times. That being said, I have purchased the second book Kingdom of the Cursed as I’m intrigued to see where the story goes

3.0 out of 5 stars Witches, demons and vampires. Yesss please!!!

"In the end, the monster we feared didn’t come from Hell. He came from privilege."
- The Kingdom of the Wicked

Soon as I read the blurb of this book, I was hooked. Witches, demons and vampires is right up my ally - I love the Hollawen vibe! 🎃

The beginning was good, the character and world building was interesting. The one thing this book lacked was the flow (which was abit disappointing). Each problem was resolved so quickly, like there wasn't enough time for it to marinade and then something else would happen straight after. Also, the amount of demons we get introduced to, blimey it was hard to keep up!

However, it was very easy to read which I really liked. It did end on a cliff hanger and I am very intrigued see how things unfold in the next book. The second part is meant to be more NA which I'm really looking forward to 😁
I'm rating this a 3.5⭐

Emilia on the hunt for her twin sisters killer only to be bound by force to Wrath a brooding Prince of the lowest pits of Hell. Soon secrets start to unravel and everything Emilia has known all her life is not what it seems. She is forced to make decisions that shape the rest of her life. Can she withstand all the obstacles and continue on this dangerous journey?

3.0 out of 5 stars Love the characters and the wickedness of all the prince's of hell

I have such conflicting feeling about this book, on the one hand i loved the characters mostly Wrath, I liked the banter between Emilia and Wrath, and the world and magic system did intrigue me, along with all the prince's of hell, but did I really like this book? No, not completely, maybe half and half.

It really had potential to wow me with the hell prince's and the wicked magic and what I was really excited for was the hell underworld, but that isn't in this book obviously it will be in book 2. But my biggest problem with kingdom of the wicked was the amount of same scenario moments and the fact that I knew who the killer was after her sister was murdered. Essential this book follows emilia questioning hell prince's over and over again and running from hell beasts while trying to solve her sister's murder.

I think I will love book 2 but this one just didn't fully work for me, love the characters and the wickedness of everyone totally makes me excited for kingdom of the cursed!

Thank you so much to the publishers at netgalley for an E-Arc in exchange for an honest review.

3.0 out of 5 stars Enjoyable but....

...I would have liked a stronger main character. I found Emelia's terrible decision making a bit frustrating and she seemed to rush from one clue thread to another without taking much time to think. Her refusal to ask for help from either family or Wrath was also quite annoying, but then if she had half the stuff wouldn't have happened. It would be nice for the heroine to be clever and calculated rather than just stumble through on sheet luck (both good and bad).

I did enjoy it and am looking forward to seeing where it goes, but enough with the moody main characters who dont know their own minds from one minute to the next yet are resolutely stubborn when making life changing decisions without much thought, and somehow have everyone around them fascinated by them.

That said, overall the story is engaging and I really liked Wrath and Emelia's interraction.

If I had to read ‘if someone told me (insert time since sister’s death occurred) I’d be doing this’ one more time I was going to close the book. I was so close to DNF-ing, but the last 1/3 to 1/4 saved it, depending on reviews I’ll grab the sequel. I feel like the whole book is just a set up for the second one? I’m so gutted I didn’t enjoy it as much as everyone else seems to have, but fingers crossed for the sequel!

Good Bits:-

Legends well developed.
Enjoyed the writing style.
Protagonist didnt fall into the irritating nor overly perfect tropes that plague fantasy heroines.
Sexual scenes made sense and were not thrown in for no reason.
My Fairyloot edition is absolutely stunning.

Not so great points:

Randomness of lesser demons
Ending bit predictable
Took a while to get into it.

But overall a solid read and i will definately read the next one.

3.0 out of 5 stars Sets up an interesting premise for book 2

I had high hopes for this book after numerous people told me how amazing it is - I wasn't exactly let down, but I found that maybe those high hopes did contribute to slight disappointment.
I really enjoyed the premise of the whole story, I just wish it moved slower. *SPOILERS* For example, the mystical Princes of Hell are supposed to have remained unseen on earth for 100 years+, yet it takes our protagonist approximately one or two short chapters to conveniently find them. Yes, she's following clues, I just wish she had a little more difficulty in reaching her goal, purely to build the suspense. Still, I did enjoy how the author set up Hell and its houses and I'm subsequently left genuinely intrigued about Kingdom of the Cursed, given the ending to this first book. Hopefully, given that it'll be NA rather than YA, the worldbuilding and realistic time frames will each improve. Additionally, Emilia and Wrath's relationship - I can't wait to see where that goes!

Could have been a good book if author wasn’t confused about the time the story is set in. It seems medieval, but then the language changes too often into modern teenage style which robs the story of its credibility. Quite a shame. I wouldn’t buy the sequel

I didn't expect much from this book (Maniscalco disappointed me a lot with Escaping from Houdini) so I thought I'd give her a second chance with this one, before reading Capturing the Devil. I knew it would not be a masterpiece and in fact I wasn't wrong.
The book is set in Sicily, in both a temporal and geographic context mostly non-existent, and, even if the author is of Sicilian origin, forget historical and cultural accuracy. No, having Italian great-grandparents is not enough, my dear Kerri. Stereotypes as if it were raining, Italian and Latin words used haphazardly and several errors aside, it's a smooth and light reading. Even if the romance is a bit MEH and I don't really like those two together; and the protagonist gets by way too easily; and Wrath (but also his brothers) is anything but a terrible and fearsome demon; and, as has already happened with Maniscalco, I knew who the killer was from the beginning.
All in all, three stars because, despite the many lows, it entertained me. It's a bit trashy, but maybe that was what I needed. I will read the second book because this one ends badly, but I will do it without too many expectations.
