5.0 out of 5 starsVery enjoyable read
Reviewed in Australia on 14 February 2022
Thoroughly enjoyed this book. I liked how I never could guess what would happen next and how the story would end. It was also good the way the author regularly goes back to the past in a way that was very easy to follow. Some reviewers here mention that they found it odd that the Italian characters in Italy all spoke English, however that did not concern me at all as I was so engrossed in the plot that I never gave it a thought! Recommend this book.

Nothing interesting about this book at all. A small step up from your basic mills and boon. Very disappointed and waste of time.

An easy and gentle read. It won’t have your heart racing, or give you sleepless nights but it will provide an escape from real life for a little while.

2.0 out of 5 stars Absurd!

As this was free from Amazon Prime, I at least didn’t waste any money on it, so it gets one star for that and another because it is written in reasonably literate English. However, the characters never seem to achieve any depth or credibility and the plot is simply absurd. I was aware that this was an ‘escapist’ novel before I began reading it, but I did not expect that it would leave reality quite so far behind. Just as an example, our heroine, Fiona, jumps on a plane almost immediately that she receives the surprising news that she has inherited a vineyard in Tuscany, speaking not a word of Italian. Yet, from the moment she arrives in the country, she appears to meet not a single person who does not speak fluent, idiomatic English. I blame myself for stepping outside my comfort zone and downloading something which I knew to be outside the usual range that I read, but I had seriously not expected it to be this bad.

2.0 out of 5 stars Easy read but not recommended

My feeling was that the author only had very limited experience of Italy. She certainly doesn’t have a feel for the linguistics and all the locals seem to speak English fluently and without accents Hmmmm! The two heroines, mother and daughter, both seem to suffer from fluttering bellies. I got so annoyed with the mention of bellies that I searched the number of occurrences. One dozen belly references in total. It is an easy read but I would hesitate to recommend it to a friend. Not the finest addition to this year's literary offerings.

2.0 out of 5 stars Quite superficial

This book started with so much promise and I really was enjoying it. Unfortunately, it just descended into a Mills and Boon novel. Anything that was supposed to be insightful quite simply wasn’t. Also, the husband is painted very badly in this book, at fault for everything whilst the daughter does not, but should, appear to harbour any ill will towards her “sainted mother”. Let’s face it, the mother ruined everyone’s life, including her daughter’s but it is not portrayed as such. In addition to this, there is almost a canonisation of Anton who is described by others as a tyrant, a thread that was never picked up on. Lots of opportunities here, all of which were sadly missed.

2.0 out of 5 stars Too many mistakes

This was a fairly predictable story that could have been told in half the pages. However, I'm not going to moan about the story as there is clearly a market for books like this, and I can't blame the author for catering to it, even if it's not really my type of book. The main reason for my low star rating though is because of mistakes that should have been picked up at the editing stage. The author uses the phrase 'In regards to...' which is grammatically incorrect and is grating to read- should be 'In/with regard to...' . Also she keeps mentioning 'grape vineyards' - nobody refers to vineyards in this way, because what other sort are there, apart from grape? One of the characters drinks 'Madeira port' - no such thing, as Madeira and port are two different drinks made in entirely different places. And finally, what beach is this woman sitting on in Tallahassee??? Even as a Brit I know that it is miles from the coast, and having looked on a map it would seem that it's even further from a beach. And I found this out by a quick search on Google Maps - would it have been beyond the powers of the author to do the same....it would seem so.

2.0 out of 5 stars As a reader I didn't like being presumed to be stupid.

As a reader I didn't like to be presumed to be stupid. I would expect an author to have some knowledge of their subject before writing about it.
This book has the depth and resonance of a new coat of nail varnish.

2.0 out of 5 stars Bad research and predictable

One of my major pet-peeves with authors is when they don't do some basic research. This book was filled with examples of that. The cheapest flights from Florida to Italy are always through Miami never New York. Tallahassee has no beach. Tallahassee is in the Big Bend not the Panhandle of Florida. Some of the descriptions of the father with quadriplegia made it sound like he could push buttons or just plain sounded off - like he more ability than he should've had. I could go on but I'll stop there. My other problem with this book was how predictable it was. I knew exactly where it was going from a few pages in and it didn't really stray from that idea in my head. There just never seemed to be any real point to this book, no depth or true substance. I kept hoping something big or dramatic would happen, but nope. So, to sum it up - don't waste your time.

*** spoiler alert***

Adultery? Betrayal of a perfectly fine, loving husband who has no idea she's unhappy? What a downturn !! Deleting this book promptly ! Just made me sick to my stomach that mom could deliberately harm her husband until she feels guilty enough to stay. Are there any moral characters in good books these days? I'm not looking for the Scarlet Letter .....but a man with a soul would be great!

Also, I kept reading assuming the book would improve..... it didn't.

Reading this was sort of like watching a Hallmark movie, mildly entertaining but not much substance. I also wonder why the book's editor didn't correct the author's geographical misstep; Tallahassee is at least an hour and a half from the gulf.
