4.0 out of 5 starsTHE STRONG WRTING IS THE MAIN APPEAL
Reviewed in Australia on 7 July 2021
Good relationships are about many things, including compromise and, none are perfect. Nick Alexander's ‘From Something Old’ shows the importance of entering relationships with your eyes wide open and armed with a healthy level of self-esteem. It also focuses on individual perspectives and motivations, as well as the impact of an individual's background and/or influences. Yes, there’s certainly a mix of complex variables when you enter and/or leave a relationship.
FSO's characters have experiences that centre around the pitfalls and pivotal moments in their relationships, but they also face the possibility of embracing change (or alternatively being blindsided by unexpected circumstances). The characters are perceptively drawn, yet I really didn’t expect to like this book as much as I did. Although there a no big surprises in the plot, it’s the author’s writing that is the book’s main attraction – witty, deceptively simple, real and communicative. After saying that, the two drawbacks are connected to the author’s writing, imo: an (arguably) drawn out conclusion; and overly referencing crying throughout the book. I have read this author some time ago, but will nevertheless check out the other titles I may have missed.

I really enjoyed the first 75% of this book, but from then on, I felt it slowed down dramatically. The ending was contrived and very predictable. And there were so many tears shed by all the characters during this book that it got to be quite annoying. A bit disappointing really.

Great page turner. Engaging characters, I cared about them and wanted to know the story, writer has created believable characters and made an easy story to read. Enjoyable book for bedtime reading, a commute or on the beach. Nothing too complex so you won't forget the plot.

This is by no means a happy story but Nick Alexander has such a way with story telling that makes the raw and real absolutely beautiful!

I am a huge fan of this author and his latest book kept me reading well into the early hours of the morning. I really appreciated the story from the different perspectives of the main characters and the skilful weaving of each viewpoint into a rather unusual novel about relationships.

5.0 out of 5 stars Reading a Nick Alexander book is like catching-up with your best friend!

Thank you, Nick, for giving me back my reading mojo!

Five minutes after starting “From Something Old” I felt as though I was watching a film, each character lit up the screen and my imagination was caught by the breath-taking scenery. A grandiose but remote villa in Spain, where to get a phone signal you had to walk halfway down the mountains. The seaside towns of Whitby, Filey and, my favourite, Robin Hoods Bay made me so nostalgic for those childhood holidays.

Heather is a nurse who puts family first. Anthony, her “Smoking Hot” husband, is a good father to their two girls, but he has been chipping away at his wife’s self-confidence since the first day they met.

Joe thinks he was punching way above his weight when he married the beautiful Amy. He absolutely adores her and will go to any lengths to keep her happy, but Amy is a dreamer and always on the lookout for her next big project.

When Lucy asks her mum and dad if they can go on holiday with Ben and his family, it starts a chain of events that will have leave an imprint on everyone’s life.

The conversations between the four characters are spellbinding, but Mr Alexander is also aware of when a simple glance, a shrug or a touch of hands can say far more than any words. He, above all other authors, has mastered the art of storytelling.

I have to say that the scenes starring Heather’s mother-in-law made my jaw drop with admiration for the way she is portrayed.

Reading a Nick Alexander book is like catching- up with your best friend, the conversation just flows and before you know it the night has ended, and you find yourself crying as you wave goodbye.

5.0 out of 5 stars A new life born out of the old
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 31 May 2021

From something old, a new life was waiting for Heather and her girls. It’s not like she was looking for a new life, although living with a negative and bull headed partner would make it seem tempting.
Heather was accepting of “her lot” and counted the blessings for the good parts of her relationship with Ant.
When a holiday to Spain with their neighbours was offered, the chance of a break away without Ant’s overbearing mother in tow seemed like a good idea. Little did they know how things would pan out.
The inevitable twists and turns of this brilliantly written novel make it difficult to put down.
Once again, Nick Alexander shows his mastery of understanding human emotions.
I can see a sequel to this book following the children’s lives as they mature into adulthood. Would the relationship break ups of their parents affect their life choices?

Oh wow, what a beautiful book. Yet another winner from Nick Alexander. When I read his books I feel as if I’m sitting down in the comfiest of armchairs, ready to catch up with old friends, or make some new ones. The story tackles really complex, difficult situations with sensitivity and empathy. The characters and their experiences of the whole gamut of emotions are totally believable. I loved the way you were given the chance to understand the story from the viewpoint of each of the main characters, even managing a bit of sympathy for the ones you didn’t particularly like. A beautifully written, thought provoking story.
