5.0 out of 5 starsArguably the best book I have ever read.
Reviewed in Australia on 28 February 2020
Naturally this is a very personal perspective but until Gabaldon came along my favourite of all time was Tolstoy's 'War and Peace'. I'm sure this must horrify those who cannot imagine comparing two such disparate pieces of literature. But quite simply I cannot put 'Outlander' down. Time and time again I find my mind wandering and wondering about what it was like in the early days of settlement in America. The subtle and sometimes not so subtle dichotmy between the 18th century and the late 1960s is fascinating, especially how Claire in her role as a healer deals with it. The honesty of admitting privately that in the 18th century these is absolutely nothing she can do to save a person's life and yet know that ca. 200 years on and it would be a no-brainer.

Unfamiliar as I am with the Celtic language I find some of the conversations and especially the witicisms pass me by - but we are getting there. It's pleasing to be challenged and treated as an intelligent reader. Gabaldon's understanding of the human condition, her empathy for her characters and her readers is sublime. The author is very skilled at conveying a sense of the excitement and fascination of what it was like to inhabit those woods at such a time as she portrays along with fine details of daily life. This takes time hence the multiple volumes but it reads anything but turgidly. In fact it is Gabaldon's ability to immerse the reader in the joy of the detail and yet become a 'page-turner' that is so unusual. I for one hope that 'Outlander' continues for my lifetime.

2.0 out of 5 starsDisappointed with quality of materials used for the book!!!!
Reviewed in Australia on 30 September 2020
Quite happy at first because the books are bigger than what I expected but then became very disappointed as the book is made from such low quality materials. The cover is really, really thin cardboard and also the pages are cheap paper, super thin. It's like school textbooks from when I was young, books to be thrown at the end of the year. What a shame as I wanted these books to last a lifetime. Amazon, what the heck?????
Storywise - I'm sure it is amazing as I love the Outlander series.

It’s a great read however very drawn out and long, but still all relevant. Definitely need to read the previous books to understand the full content.
Still worth it

4.0 out of 5 stars Another good one

I read some negative reviews for this book, prior to buying and reading it. I was right in disregarding those reviews as it is another great story, although I do prefer the first book set in Scotland and the way that one was written.
I only gave 4 stars because it did tend, very occasionally, to ‘meander’ a little. Still good for the background though.
I definitely recommend this book.

4.0 out of 5 stars What an epic adventure back in time

Jamie eventually meets his daughter Brianna who ventures through the stones ending up in Scotland to discover her ancestors and then on down south to get a passage across to America - pretty gruesome details from Diana Gabaldon - anyhow the story continues as she is reunited with her parents and so their adventure and toils continues but where will it all end - the only way is to keep reading and swiftly buy the next book. It really has been an epic adventure from the start of Book One....enormous detail of the time in history, if you enjoy adventure and can cope with some of the reality of shady side of life in the mid 18th Century then buy this book, but best to start with Diana's first in the series, and work your way through. Great holiday books, or books when you certainly have time on your side as they are long.

Thoroughly enjoyed this book and I am really enjoying the whole Outlander book series. The Fiery Cross is definitely more descriptive than the others and there are some slow parts. However overall I enjoyed the story and the character development in the book, all the Jamie and Claire bits of course and the historical aspect of the novel too. I read this book quicker than I thought I would and the season 5 of the show did a lot of things differently so it was interesting to read the novel and compare it with the tv series. Love the books and am on to the next one!

I struggled with the first part of those book. But I am so glad I persevered. As usual it made me laugh, cry, gasp, worry, be cross and breathe a sigh of relief. But not necessarily in that order! The perfect mix of emotions for the trials and tribulations of the Frasers and McKenzies. I can't wait to watch it now and read the next book!

4.0 out of 5 stars I am continuing to enjoy the story of exiled Scots in America after Culloden

I am continuing to enjoy the story of exiled Scots in America after Culloden. The writing and descriptions are colourful and interesting but the sometimes the detail is too much to retain as the books are long and holding so much information in mind is a chore. Good job I am reading on Kindle and can quickly search for the first time a character appears.

One of the many books of Outlander. Good continuation of the story. Very intriguing. Diana Gabaldon has an inventive memory and has obviously done extensive research.

It's a great continuing story from the Outlander series. It is a bit of a plod though, I am in the mind that some of the more gory stuff
and the description of bodily fluids could have been left out Not to be read if one is eating.
