The remaster of both this and the Hobbit trilogy and colour matching/correction between the digital and film formats they were originally filmed in is very well worth it - despite the protestation of vocal evangelists, to my eye they are outstanding transfers and provides a cohesive whole set to be enjoyed for many many years. I doubt they will ever be improved upon. Dolby ATMOS/Master Audio and Dolby Vision/HDR10+ mastering, as well as practically-film-grain free transfers on the LOTR episodes (the Hobbit was digital filmed) help to make this thrilling watching.
The product arrived earlier than expected which was a pleasant surprise, the box itself is really nice and the individual cases were in great condition. No cracks, tears or anything of that sort. The quality of the DVDs in terms of how they play in a console or Blu-Ray player were top notch. No stuttering, freezing or scene skipping at all and the sound quality was superb along with the picture quality. Middle-Earth never looked so spectacular in HD 1080.
It was twelve hours of fun I shall re-watch again and again.
So why the four stars?
Honestly this is more a minor nitpick/gripe on my part but it's still important for me when purchasing DVDs, games or CDs. And that gripe is that the disks should have no scratches or smudges on them whatsoever, especially if they're brand new.
And while none of the movie or behind the scenes disks had any scratches that I could see, which was a relief, each disk still had numerous finger smudges covering certain parts of them. Again, not really a serious thing, just a nitpick/gripe on my part.
All in all still a great purchase. If you have yet to watch The Lord of the Rings Trilogy or are looking for a great collection to add to your DVD shelf, then absolutely check this box set out.
The movie is enchanting on blu ray. There is no other way I can say it. A must own for anyone that loves LOTR and High Definition video in equal proportions. I'm not kidding, order it. Right now. Especially when you have a surround sound system that is way too loud and a 60" plasma to enjoy it with. I have only watched the first movie so far, but it was so incredible I wanted to save the other two for special occasions. Writing this review has made me want to watch more, so off I go.
I rated it 4 stars only because it would have been nice if all the discs were blu rays, but the extras and special features are on DVD. 5 stars for the blu rays (two per movie).
As a self nominated Tolkien Freak, I recommend getting this product. Any fan will spot errors in the filming, but what is important is the Middle Earth illustration on film. Everyone that reads the books makes their own Middle Earth, but this is their Tolkien Movie Marathon to share with friends. Always a good time and for those fan girls, some alone time with those beautiful delicate elves. You know what I'm talking about...
