4.0 out of 5 starsA rollicking good read - just skip the last chapter
Reviewed in Australia on 4 August 2021
Aloysius Archer is a great character but for the first few chapters of this novel, I felt he was a character in search of a story. However, the pace quickened and the next 60 or so chapters were a good read in hard-boiled detective style with echoes of Raymond Chandler: beautiful dames; lots of corpses; a wealthy patriarch; a couple of ugly thugs; great dialogue and tightly written prose.

Unfortunately, like so many of Baldacci’s most recent novels, the final chapter seems tacked on for those who have to have a happy ending of the schmalzy sort. My advice - just skip chapter 71 unless you really need a Bogie and Bacall moment à la "The Big Sleep".

3.0 out of 5 starsNot one of his best, but still entertaining.
Reviewed in Australia on 3 November 2021
Aloysius Archer is an interesting character but some of his chance meetings and interactions with people, stretch credibility a little. His knack for being in the wrong place at the wrong time, yet still coming out on top, quickly becomes predictable. I’m a huge Baldacci fan and have read most of his books, I wouldn’t rate this one among his best, but I still found it entertaining.

Starts slow but then burns up and I couldn’t put it down. Highly recommended and plenty of twists and turns

4.0 out of 5 stars An Enjoyable Read

The story started out a bit slow and I realised I had lost track of its hero and went back to read once again the first book (one Good Deed) about Archer..As usual, Baldacci's writing style is excellent, his details well covered and his story line exciting to follow.

The 2nd Archer just gets him rolling, getting better instincts, more inquisitive, and by the time your finished you will want the third instalment. A character and a time, in a period that just keeps getting better.

I liked the mental pictures that the writing engendered - I did feel I fully understood the scenes, set. Baldacci's writing usually just misses me, but this one was closer to hitting the mark for me.

From start to finish, it had me enthralled so much that I could not put it down. I can’t wait for the next Archer novel. David, I have read every one of your books and the more you write the better you get. Keep it up
