TOP 50 REVIEWER
4.0 out of 5 starsGreat read
Reviewed in Australia on 28 September 2021
This is the first King book I’ve read and at first I didn’t think I was going to be gripped by it. However, as the tale of the hit man with a moral code unfolds it’s impossible not to be drawn in. He’s performed the hit by about 30%: what could the rest of the story be about? Well, life is complicated by rescuing a rape victim and by discovering the back story of why the hit was necessary. This involves a nefarious media mogul who’s somewhat reminiscent of Rupert Murdoch (who will not be appreciating the portrayal). In between times, he finds his cover as an aspiring author isn’t. Because in writing about his early life and his time as a marine in Iraq he becomes a real author - of a story that can never be published. The story has two endings: the fake one finished by the girl he saves and the real, sadder one. Good stuff, and there’s only one minor bit of supernaturalness to it. That’s what put me off reading other books by King.

1.0 out of 5 starsLike a bad Jack Reacher novel
Reviewed in Australia on 18 August 2021
As I am a long-time fan of Stephen King, Billy Summers was a massive disappointment. I persisted to the end hoping it would get better; sadly, it didn't.
It starts out with promise -- a slightly mysterious job for a hired killer who senses something might be amiss but just can't help doing this one last job for a big payday; the classic Stephen King trope of lead character who is also a writer (will this angle lead to some macabre twist (like in The Dark Half) or stunning insight?); the small-town Americana observations.
Once the first act is complete the story takes an unexpected turn with the arrival of a new character to play the female lead for the book's second act, but this felt random and forced - very unlike King. From there Billy Summers devolves to read like a Jack Reacher/Lee Child novel, and not a very good one I'm afraid to say.
The brief throwback reference in the second part of this book to one of King's classic early novels was bizarre and completely out of kilter with the rest of the story. Sorry to disappoint fans, but this is far from Stephen King's best work.

1.0 out of 5 stars King has lost his imagination

The plot is fragmented, the prose average, the ending laboured. Compared to early books there is no “spark”/creativity etc. If you hate Trump you may get some enjoyment out of the odd point scoring barb about the orange one but for many this will just seem tedious.

1.0 out of 5 stars This was my last shot

I grew absolutely tired with King’s more recent novels obsessing over Donald Trump. I figured it would be a thing of the past considering he’s no longer President but boy was I wrong. Within the first 50 pages I believe there were about five or six Trump references.

Enough is enough. Tired of the non stop political commentary. Closed the book and requested a refund.

It’s a shame because he used to be a fantastic author. 11/22/63 was his last decent book. Everything after has been mediocre at best or painful like this outing at worst.

I have always been a big Stephen King fan, I have all his works and love them. But....this is a big disappointment. The repetition and explaining of things, as though his "dear reader" is an idiot is sad. Never mind his political views seeping in and being a hindrance to the story. I expected so much more than this out of a good writer.

I quit reading this at page 149.
This was easily one very boring book ( for what i've read).
Besides starting talking about Trump at page 4, there is absolutely nothing in this book.
For 150 pages, Hitman Billy plays with neighboor's kids, eats with neighboors, constantly explains in details what they are eating, Billy shops on Amazon , next day delivery or not is clearly explained....
Like really? Life is too short to waste time reading books we don't like .
But , it's my fault for still buying King's books. Last book i enjoyed from him was Revival, Outsider was ok-ish. Everything else is rubbish.
I really don't care how this one ends. Full stop.

I have read all of King's books since Salem's Lot. I greatly enjoyed the vast majority of them. Why he would think his readers give a damn about his political views is beyond me. I usually give my books to friends when I am done with them. This one went into the trash along with "The Cellist" by Daniel Silva for the same reasons. If I were interested in this political crap, I would watch CNN (I don't).

1.0 out of 5 stars Not a bad story - would have been better without Kings politics

As per usual and as expected King injects his millionaire leftist politics into every chapter, over and over. Trump lives rent free in his head. I grew up in the UK reading Stephen King loved his earlier books pity he can’t face the fact people with a different political opinion aren’t evil incarnate.

Spoiler warning…

I bought this thinking that Mr King (an author of some of my favourite books) had delved into the world of action, assassins and hitmen.

Wrong - this is a character driven story that has very little to do with hitmen and more to do with going to the shops and being a nice neighbour.

Nothing happened for the first 200 hundred pages apart from a monopoly tournament, getting a lot of Trump references, being told that dumb people read comic books and being told Amazon is a great place to buy stuff.

I forced myself to read the entire book and it has a horrible (but not unexpected) ending. Not a book for people who like happy endings or fans of all out action.

The reviews for this book showed great promise. However I found it boring. Very reluctantly I gave up half way through not caring how it ended. Quite the opposite of a page turner.
