5.0 out of 5 starsLess scratch prone than previous gen leather case
Reviewed in Australia on 28 October 2021
Update May 2022: I've been using the case / Kindle daily since release, and I'm happy to say the leather has softened up making it feel nicer. Also, it has protected my SE extremely well, including surviving a couple of accidental drops. For being very sturdy and a great fit, I'm increasing the stars from 4 to 5.

--
I just received the 11th Gen black leather case early, ordered with the Signature edition Kindle that I'm still waiting for, and am sharing my early impressions as they may benefit others.

Compared to the old, the 10th generation Kindle leather cover is much harder - appearing and feeling almost plastic like. The 10th generation cover is by comparison completely soft to touch on the outside. Inside they're much the same, a smooth micro fibre surface - although a different colour.

Whilst I much prefer the feeling of the outside texture of the old, it is highly vulnerable to being scratched - so I can see the new lasting far longer "as new". After my daughter decided to draw on the 10th gen case with a ballpoint pen however I used real leather cleaner and honey leather conditioner to restore it, and it came out really nice - and even softer than when new. Those scratches could be described as character, and I feel I may miss it in the 11th gen case - but I'm certain a lot of people won't.

As the 11th gen felt quite hard to the touch, especially directly compared to the old, I applied a bit of conditioner to the new one. It may have helped a bit with the dryness, but it wasn't by much. Time will tell if it softens up with use.

Overall it feels less luxurious, but more practical - it would stand up to water splashes far better, and I'll absolutely enjoy not having to worry about scratching it as much.

(I've included size comparison shots of the old vs new case as I'm sure the difference will be of interest especially for those looking forward to a larger unit; I'm really looking forward to the slightly larger 11th gen. I'll update my impressions when it arrives.)

3.0 out of 5 starsWorks well enough, but doesn't look, feel or smell like leather.
Reviewed in Australia on 14 November 2021
Fits my new Paperwhite well and does everything it needs to do with efficiency. It seems tough and should last. But i expected something softer, grippier, and more natural feeling. This cover looks and feels like hard plastic and fails to deliver the sort of feel I've always enjoyed with the various Kindles I've owned over the past many years, since the earliest versions. That makes it expensive for what it is, and I would have looked for something else if I'd known what I now know about its feel. I suggest you check it out before you buy, to avoid disappointment.

1.0 out of 5 stars Plastic not leather.

Decided to upgrade my wife's well used kindle for a new gen. The leather case we had for the original unit was really well made and beautiful to touch.

Ordered this cover without much thought figuring it would be the same quality. How wrong we were.

I'm not sure whether it should be described as pleather or just plastic. Horrible to touch, hard cover, honestly not sure how it can be described as a leather cover as I don't think there is a piece of leather on the whole case.

Very disappointing and a huge step backwards from the cases previously supplied for Kindles.

Purchase something else if you have a choice.

1.0 out of 5 stars Terribly cheap feeling

Just upgraded to the new Kindle from my old Paperwhite and replaced my leather cover too. I was so disappointed in this cover, I thought they'd sent the wrong one at first, but they don't have a plastic version so it might be right. I can't believe how much the quality has dropped - doesn't look or feel anything like leather. It's cheap and nasty, despite the price. Returned.

For the cost and brand, all I can say is I'm disappointed.

I'd get a refund if I could, but they don't allow it.

1.0 out of 5 stars Disappointingly Cheap
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 27 October 2021
Color: BlackStyle Name: LeatherVerified Purchase
When Amazon announced the new Kindle Paperwhite, having had my previous model for around eight years, I decided to upgrade. As with my last purchase, I bought the official Amazon leather case.

The Kindle is a premium device and my previous leather case added to that premium feel. The new case has clearly been made with far less care. The shell on my old version was a rubber-coated plastic. On the new case, the shell is just plastic. This thin plastic does not feel anywhere near as nice to hold and feels as though it may crack or smash if dropped.

On my old case, the leather was stitched and had a slightly tactile spriginess. On the new case, the leather is glued onto more plastic. Again, it just feels rubbish.

The only minor improvement with the new case is the microfibre cloth on the inner cover. (Though in fairness, I never had any issues with the fabric cover on my previous version).

It disappoints me that Amazon's own leather case now seems to have declined in quality, to such a degree that a third-party case or sleeve is likely to be my prefered option. I will be returning this case after submitting this review.

1.0 out of 5 stars Overpriced plastic piece of tat
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 22 November 2021
Color: Cork (Dark)Style Name: CorkVerified Purchase
In my head, I was imagining this to be a glorious cork case which exuded comfort and was a pleasure to use. The reality is that it is a plastic piece of tat that I'm amazed is retailing for more than £5.

Yes, it has cork on it: A thin sliver of cork which doesn't even feel like cork. The whole case feels mostly plastic. This also means it is not comfortable to hold as the edges are thin lines of plastic -- you don't feel the cork. It's softer / easier to hold the Kindle by itself.

This is really disappointing, as back in the day, the Kindle cases were really good and comfortable! The quality has dropped horrifically with the pricing increasing.

1.0 out of 5 stars Feels cheap and plasticky, not like leather

Really disappointing purchase. I have pre-ordered the Kindle Signature so thought I’d go for a good quality case. I have the leather case for an older Kindle which is really nice, yet this is nothing like it. I genuinely thought I’d been sent the wrong one because I’m struggling to believe this is actually leather. But I suppose it must be. However it just feels and looks like hard plastic. I showed my friend who said the same. Anyway I wouldn’t recommend this at all.

1.0 out of 5 stars I really like the colour, but for the quality the price point is not justified
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 29 October 2021
Color: MerlotStyle Name: LeatherVerified Purchase
I really like the colour of this cover, and appreciate the fact that the lining on the inside is the same wine red as the rest of the cover rather than black or grey, but I'm not impressed by this Kindle case at the price point.

The cover is leather-coated at the front, and has a plastic tray that acts as a holder for the device at the back. The tray has cut outs running right the way along the top and bottom edges of the device. This means that the power button and charging port on the bottom edge of the device are always accessible – but the extent of the cut-outs leaves quite a lot of the device exposed. This doesn't offer great protection.

The leather is a thin layer of textured leather over the front of the case. It’s not the nicest feeling leather ever, kind of plasticky, but the texturing does help to make this anti-slip. The edges of the front cover are sealed with a sort of rubbery coating – and if this behaves like the seal on previous generations of Kindle cases I have owned, over time will start to peel off. The cover folds over easily for one-handed reading, if this is how you like to hold your device, but doesn’t feel floppy if you prefer to hold this opened outwards book-like. The front cover isn’t padded, but has a soft-textured microfibre lining. This generally seems a drop in quality versus the cases to accompany the previous generation of Paperwhite.

Auto wake works as it should.

Pros
- Good, secure fitting tray
- Nice colour
- Anti-slip texturing

Cons
- Price point
- The excessive amount of the device left exposed by cut-outs in the holder tray
- Quality less good than previous generation cases

1.0 out of 5 stars Very poor quality – do not buy this!
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 18 November 2021

I am shocked at how poor quality this cover is. I would not even find it acceptable if it had cost a tenth of what it does. It is very clearly made of cheap plastic but the worst part is that holding the Kindle with the cover open is very unpleasant and uncomfortable – it is bad enough that the way the cover flips around makes it a bit awkward to hold but what really makes it horrible is the sharp edges of the plastic which feel almost like you can cut yourself on them.

The old original Amazon leather cover for my 2014 Paperwhite was great. This is a disaster.

Returned straight away.
