4.0 out of 5 starsWorth a watch

This movie has a typical Australian cinematic feel - set un rural Australia, it features quintessential working-class blokes who think a village member who left to go to the city to work is a sell-out. It features the detrimental effects that a mob mentality can have when mob judgements of others are based on personal bias. It was very enjoyable but like everything Australian made - it's all from the male perspective - men feature front and centre. The women in it are perceived as victims, as suspicious or as something to be desired.

Very disappointing. Over-written metaphors and a lack of understanding of rural communities - the author insists on fields and barns instead of sheds and paddocks. There’s no school bus. Then, the perpetrator of the murders is very easily guessed. I’m usually hopeless at guessing the perpetrator but I picked this one easily. The film is marginally better despite Julia Blake’s lack of an Australian accent and some very confused geography. I expected so much more of Jane Harper.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Aussie film

I clocked this movie, as first time ever I saw one with critics giving 100 out of 100 points. So, watched it at last and it didn't disappoint. Eric Bana and John Poulson are of course very recognisable and great actors but the supporting cast is excellent as well. The local police officer stuck especially in mind. Cinematograpghy is punchy, really bringing home the sunburnt landscape. I loved the juxtaposition of this majestic, dry, indifferent stage, where the rich and messy human story was playing out.And the story itself - not going to say anything here, you have to watch it. But the age old human issues are explored in a heartrending way. This one stays with you.

I really enjoyed this movie. Having read the book, I wasn't sure how the complexities of the plot would translate onto the big screen, but they have done a very good job. The characters are well rounded and the acting is very good overall. My only quibble is that the denouement seems rushed to me, but overall, it's well worth watching.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Australian Whodunnit

Eric Bana is outstanding in this role of a policeman returning to the suffocating small country town of his youth (and its tragedy), after a tragic event involving an old friend.

With many twists and turns exposing the aridness of drought and suffering around him, he finally gets to the bottom of it in a spine chilling finale.

Great supporting roles by fantastic actors Jon Poulson and Irish/Australian Genevieve O'Reilly who bring the depth of their long and storied careers to these roles.

Well worth watching and deservedly one of the most seen Australian movies in history now.

5.0 out of 5 stars A great example of a movie living up to the hype

I thought they did a great job of bringing a fantastic book to the big screen. Generally good acting (always a worry with Aussie stars), well adapted script and nicely filmed. I think I saw an official review giving it a 7/10 which I'd have to agree with (mind you, I'm a part time couch potato movie critic at best!).

A slowly evolving tale of love , loss, choices made and roads taken ..and the hidden secrets off small country towns .. Held my attention and had me trying to second guess each character’s motives and actions .. So yes a totally believable tale with some very fine acting..

5.0 out of 5 stars AUSTRALIAN DRAMA/MYSTERY
Reviewed in Australia on 18 July 2021

The Dry is more than a regional drama mystery, some suspense and violence of course and some questionable characters into the mix. Eric Bana is a detective returning to the region after a decade of city living, he is caught up in the story with his past coming back to haunt him.

5.0 out of 5 stars Gripping, tense and well made.

Although I'm Australian I often find it difficult to enjoy Australian-made films. The Dry made me eat this notion as not only is it a brilliant Australian film it is unequivocally one of the best crime thrillers I have seen in years. Tense and mysterious from the beginning and gripping right up until the end,
The Dry kept me on the edge of my seat and satisfied me with its conclusion. The acting is superb and for the most part, the story holds up better than a lot of thrillers tend to. Definitely worth a watch.

Very compelling, I had been curious about this movie and wanting to watch it. Eric Bana was perfect as Aaron, and the rest of the cast was well suited as well. I enjoyed the gradual unravelling of the facts surrounding the two sets of murders, and nothing in the town is as it seems.
Easily one of the best Australian films out there

This was an “on the edge of your seat” film as you try to unravel who was the killer in this Australian who dunnit. The end was surprising.
The Australian scenery was stunning and related to the drought in our Australian way of life.
The cast, led by Eric Bana played their roles well.
I thoroughly enjoyed this film and would recommend it highly.

5.0 out of 5 stars A fantastic movie. Well worth a look

They did a fantastic job and apart from actor selection being a little off with the book, they did a great job of sticking to the story. The film makers did a great job too and some great cinematography as well. Well worth watching this one. One of the best Australian movies I have watched for some time. I do not write reviews, so doing so says something.
