1.0 out of 5 stars Such a disappointment

Enjoying the story until the story veered into the authors political bias. I wouldn’t mind if it was germane to the plot..it wasn’t. It seemed like she had the book 3/4 written and was forced to meet a deadline. Triggered by the election, she inserted every social ill topic she can think of into the last quarter of the book. Totally ruined the book for me. Her heavy reliance on a thesaurus was also distracting.

1.0 out of 5 stars Leave politics to the politicians

Enjoyed reading, but deleted entire book when author voiced opinion on 2016 presidential election. Should not have gone there. A clown (?) I hardly think so, look at what we've got in the white house now!

A book trying to include every woke subject; addictions, discrimination, LGBT, immorality, climate change, mining, pro choice, etc. And to top it off some tears over Trump being elected. Predictable but a quick read.

I was enjoying this book until politics entered and ruined my interest in the characters and storyline. Too many divisive agendas in today’s world if we have to stumble over political opinions about elections in an ordinary novel.

1.0 out of 5 stars Came away with a new appreciation for the irrational fears of the 40 something generation.

I picked this book from the list of First Reads in October. The pickings were slimmer than usual this month so I decided to pick something completely different.. Although I found the story entertaining, I mostly came away with a better understanding of the psychosis which seems to infect many of Isabel's generation. Her reluctance to have children reflects a certain immature and frankly a bit hysterical reaction to climate change - a phenomena which history and science suggest is nothing new to our planet and likely more natural than caused by man. I came away feeling sorry for her and her generation who seem to live in fear of life. Given her hysterical and delusional reaction to a normal Presidential election, I couldn't help but think that Isabel's reactions to that event and climate change might be more the reaction of the author than what someone raised in Appalachia might have had. This particular part of the story seemed to be gratuitous and transparent TDS. Sad. Bottom line is this is a pretty good yarn, but be prepared to skim over the authors attempt at injecting her personal beliefs about climate change, Trump and coal mining. You will enjoy the book more,

1.0 out of 5 stars A disaster

This book was such a disappointing waste of time. Obviously this author has not spent a week in the South.... cheap stereotypes so common of people who've never lived here.... grasping liberal ideas. She really went off rails.

1.0 out of 5 stars Too woke

You can tell the author comes from academia because it is so woke. Also, it was flowery and verbose , like she was required to have a certain amount of words in her book before she could submit it for publication.

I enjoyed the book, even though it jumped around, right up to the page where the author started inserting every cause de jour into her writing. If I want to read about politics, I'll buy a book about politics.

1.0 out of 5 stars Well written, but ...
Reviewed in the United States on 6 October 2021

I appreciate the originality of the story line, however, what seems to be the author's dislike and disdain for all of the characters and their respective cultures was too prominent for my taste. I don't think there was one character or scene that was written in such a way that seemed to believably highlight any redeeming features. Overall, the entire book felt like a commentary on the author's negative view of people, no matter their background.

1.0 out of 5 stars leave politics out of story line

the authors political views added absoluely nothing to the story. Furthermore, it was a long and convoluted read in which i never felt close to any of the characters or really cared what happened to them. i did finish the book as i wanted to solve the mystery of how Charlie died. Just disappointed in this novel.
