How are ratings calculated?
To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average. Instead, our system considers things like how recent a review is and if the reviewer bought the item on Amazon. It also analyses reviews to verify trustworthiness.

3.0 out of 5 stars Super simple fitness tracker for kids
Reviewed in Canada on 26 April 2021

The Ace 3 is a very simple Fitness tracker aimed at 8 to 12-year olds. It offer the basics like step and sleep tracking, in addition to silent alarms and some notification pushing from your main device. Note that you will want to set up your child's Fitbit account on a separate device from your main Fitbit account, otherwise you will be endless logging in and out of each account to view stats, etc. (We have our Ace 3 set up on my son's iPad.)

The Ace 3 is aimed at kids from 8 to 12, and it must be set up using a child account. If you are an adult looking for a simple fitness tracker, this can work for you. However, the Ace 3 cannot be setup on an adult Fitbit account. You will need to create an adult account, then make a family, and then finally add a child account. If your child turns 13 while using the Ace 3, the Fitbit account can be easily migrated to an adult account and the Ace 3 will continue to work.

Because of the intended audience, the Ace 3 is really limited. There is no GPS, no heart rate monitor, no music controls or phone options. It is a bare bones, super basic tracker. On the plus side, the controls are very easy. A simple tap actives the screen (which can be customized), and swiping and pinching allows for easy movement between the screens. Unfortunately, the Ace 3 isn't very reactive, so my son finds himself having to tap on the screen several times to make it wake up.

The included band is silicone and is easily replaceable. It is comfortable, but be sure to watch for rashes. (I can't wear silicone bands, but my son seems to not have an issue with them so far.)

Charging is done with an included proprietary charger. It is actually a bit of a pain to snap the Ace 3 off the charger, so take care when doing so. Battery life is supposed to be about 8 days, and we've found it to be closer to 7.

Honestly, there are better kid-centric (or at least kid-friendly) fitness trackers out there. My son has been using a Mi Band 5 for a while and he prefers it because it is much more fully featured. The main advantage of the Fitbit is that he can easily share stats with his dad (who uses an adult Fitbit) and they can do challenges together through the Fitbit app.

3.0 out of 5 stars Great idea, poor execution

I have to agree with a lot of the reviewers here on the shortcomings of this device. It is defiantly kid-oriented, and the fit is made for small wrists, which makes this more comfortable than most, but not all, of the non-brand name fitness trackers we've tried. The band seems to be comfortable enough, there haven't been any complaints about it, and he is wearing it while sleeping.

Construction-wise, the extra layer of silicone rubber that the device is mounted in offers better protection from the various device-killing activities kids can get involved in.

Getting it connected to the kid app was simple and quick. It's had no problem reconnecting to the phone, but in general, the app is lack lustre. Setting up the account is not the same as one for adults. There are options but simply using a separate account was the easiest option.

We like the idea that this doesn't have the means to play any games, there are enough screens for that these days.

It has the usual capabilities, including heart rate, but the feature doe's not function for some ridiculous reason. We tried everything to discover what it takes to get it going, but it seems as if the sensor isn't connected internally. The LED works, but there is no indication in the device that it detected any activity.

While the charging clip looks like it's meant to be simple, it is, in fact, a bugger to use. If it's not perfectly lined up, it doesn't work and lining it up can be frustrating. On the upside, the battery life is very good. It needs a charge about once a week.

Accuracy when counting steps is no better than with the no-name options. On a typical walk, it's out about 20%, and this is without any arm-waving or bouncing around.

This ends up being not a lot more than an electronic watch for kids, and there are far better, less expensive options available. I would recommend looking elsewhere till FitBit fixes this model, especially at this price. All your paying for is the brand name.

3.0 out of 5 stars Cheap band and parental control

The "Fitbit Ace 3 Activity Tracker for Kids 6+, Black/racer Red, One Size" is a bit cheap on the band (especially for the price). The tracker is really simple, but a parent has to set it up and monitor it. The person wearing the tracker has little control to customize. Overall, it would be better just to get your kid a REAL tracker for the price.
