The first book in a new series by James Patterson and Candice Fox, 2 Sisters Detective Agency is a legal thriller. Rhonda Bird is a public defender in Colorado when she is notified of her estranged father’s death in Los Angeles. Forced to attend the will reading not only does she discover her father had a private detective agency but she also has a half-sister. As the new complications of her life unfold, Rhonda discovers her father’s secrets and this unusual crime investigator team gets caught up in dangerous work. With an enticing premise and a most enjoyable spirited protagonist, and her savvy side-kick, this is a four-star read rating. Bring on further adventures as Candice Fox gives rise to a more noteworthy James Patterson read.
If the formula works - Why change it? For me his formula of short sharp chapters, with twisty surprises has worked for years for me, and this new one is no different. Why 4 stars? This time I didn't like the lead characters. Certainly "Baby" need a good "talking to" though I suspect in the next novel she will be just a bit more bearable. Also (no spoiler I hope) I truly did NOT like the ending. But that's just me. A good solid page turner, and if/when he does produce a second "2 Sisters" I will probably get it!
… and that is a good thing, because someone has to be the adult around here. I think the Patterson/Fox team works well—he has the formula and she has some original ideas. I certainly hope that there are not many of the kind of teens you meet in this book. As for some more of this series, well, I will buy.
What I loved most about this book was that the main characters weren't your usual ones. With a not so slim, kick ass teen advocate older sister rocking the unconventional personna to the sassy, sensible vulnerable, brave intuitive teen sister striving to find her place in the world, these characters really resonated with me and I so hope there will be more in this series. With hard hitting themes involving drug cartels, serial killers and assassins, the 2 Sisters Detective Agency takes us to some dark places, yet the dialogue between the sisters offers some light relief from the darkness. I read this in a couple of sittings, enjoying the way the two narratives interweaved giving insight into the teen killers points of view, and Rhonda and Baby (the 2 sisters0 developing relationship in the midst of the killings and threates from the drug cartels. Highly recommended
A new series that starts off with a bang, it's a slow burner but recommend readers stick with it, I can see there will be more instalments going forward. The story itself was well paced but it's not a story that will make you think about it after finishing it. 3 out of 5 would be too harsh so I've rated it at 4 as you always love in hope the next instalment will be better.
What can I say about this author and his writing that hasn't been said already.?. Exciting. Captivating. Thrilling. An adventure in words. But then I always know that James Patterson is going to 'come up with the goods'! And he doesn't disappoint, especially in these uncertain times. Thank you.
