2.0 out of 5 starsBoring travel diary
Reviewed in Australia on 18 January 2022
A boring travel diary, I was disappointed not to enjoy the usual wit and stimulating vocabulary of Kate, as heard on her radio programs. Instead, this was a facile plodding through life as a family of expats. On and on it went with “and then we went here and ate this delicious meal, and then we went there with the B-list Aussie radio people and ate that, and then I went on a girls’ weekend and it was fun” kind of thing, on and on. There was nothing touching or moving or insightful as promised, in my view. Not worth the time or money.

What a delightful read Ciao Bella! is! The author’s writing style is so descriptive that you can swear that you’re there in amongst it with her family. I’m sure I could smell the aromas, taste the food and drink, hear the accents and take in the delightful scenery.
Making reference to online mapping services and their associated business links means that you can carry out an online visit to most of the cafes, restaurants, bars and points of interest that the family and their friends visited. At one stage I felt that the author was sitting opposite me and relating the stories and adventures in person.
A highly recommended book!

Oh Kate! What a superb job! I swear I could smell and taste Bologna! It captured me from the very first page to the last sentence. I wished it was longer. Thank you for sharing your journey. It was an incredible read. You transported me to Italy. Thank you what a great read it was.

I enjoyed every moment of this book. It was well written, engaging and funny without being self-conscious about it. I have been to Italy, although not Bologna- might have to add that to my list for next time - and it was delightful to reminisce about the people, the experiences and the undeniably amazing food. Kate was so brave in uprooting the family and relocating across the globe, but what an experience it turned out to be. Brava!

I picked up this as a “between books” book, and was then completely immersed and in love with the people, the stories and Italy.
As a woman, a mother, an Australian, an Italianophile and a foodie this was a delightful, poignant and glorious read.
I am full of admiration for Kate Langbroek - for her writing, her humour, her humanity, her curiosity and the overwhelming love for family, friends, food and all things Italian that shines out in this book

I really enjoyed this book. The author has a lovely writing style which draws you in. The story about her and her family living in Italy before and through Covid was a great read. With no international travel for the last couple of years and Italy being a favourite destination I felt I lived vicariously through her book. Recommended

Kate Langbroek is always hilarious and entertaining, whether it’s TV or radio she’s always a delight with her dry humour. It’s also nice to read of people’s experiences when moving to a foreign country, what they expect and achieve

Loved this heart felt journey. Reignited my deep passion for this beautiful country. Kate has done an exceptional job at providing in depth details and such a true and accurate insight on Italian bureaucracy, it's wonderful history and culture.
Any gastronomes out there will be fascinated, as she so delicately describes her mouth watering dishes that she and her family savoured through their journey.

This book is a light hearted look at a country change. Just loved it as it was real, funny and raw. With a side serving of lock down . I would love to move to Italy one day.
