The only wish i had after reading the first book in the series is for the second to be more spicy and boy did Harley delivered! I loved how the relationship of Zane and Juniper progressed and developed throughout the book, and the SPICE!
Even if these books can be read as stand-alone I just loved getting more information on the story. I can’t wait for the next book to finish the story
Where to even begin!? Firstly, thank you Harley for sending me the ARC; Her Soul for Revenge was a helluva ride! For anyone just tuning in, this is book 2 of the Souls Trilogy. The books can be read as standalones but for maximum pleasure are best enjoyed read in sequence. Also worth noting is the trigger warning (gun/ knife play, murder, dubcon to name a few). This book won’t be for everyone so don’t be one of those people that ignores the triggers, reads the book anyway and then leaves a crappy review (it’s not the book, it’s you so don’t be one of those people!). I have one gripe with this book, and that’s in regards to the overlap with book 1. A lot of it felt like I was reading Her Soul to Take but from different POVs. That said there was enough newness added to hook me into the story. There also wasn’t as much of a horror element. The focus was more on the dark, dirty and gritty storyline and character development. I really loved Juniper and Zane. Juniper our MFC while broken and damaged is also a real badass who goes in guns blazing. Zane on the other hand, our dark sexy tattooed and pierced big bad demon is crazy and quirky. I really liked that even though he’s an Alpha, he’s also comfortable enough in his own skin to be able to submit and that he doesn’t shy away from those soft, fluffy feelings. Honestly, Harley if you wanted to do a Juniper and Zane book (novella?) after this trilogy I’d be all over that. I couldn’t get enough of these two. They’re the antiheroes we all need in our lives.
Overall I really enjoyed HSFR, the blend of dark, horror, and of course smut is perfection. I’m also a big fan of Harleys writing style and ability to weave together a unique story that draws you in from the first page and keeps you hooked till the very end. I’m looking forward to the next book to see where the story takes up. Plus, who doesn’t love an all-powerful demon in a suit.
Her Soul For Revenge is a dark paranormal romance, and it lives up to it. Kinky, action-packed and at its core, survival. Our heroine, Juniper, has been on the run from the cult that tried to sacrifice her. Only to return to that same town and seek her revenge.
This novel is a kinky masterpiece, definitely one to be read. The chemistry between Juniper and Zane is to die for, and we haven’t even touched on the kinky scenes. There are no words to describe it. Shocking, amazing and downright bloody. You just have to read it to understand.
Harley has done a fantastic job of keeping this novel entwined with HSTT. While HSFR follows a similar timeline of events, Juniper’s story is vastly different with strong undertones of revenge, trauma and the desire for survival. You can enjoy and delve deeper into the town we came to love from Juniper’s vengeful perspective.
In all honesty, anything by Harley is a must-read. Each published book is of a high quality, never ceasing to amaze with her well thought out and vivid stories. Can't wait for the third novel!
Her Soul to Take was one of my favourite books this year and I’ve been dying for Her Soul for Revenge ever since. At this point Harley Laroux could write the ingredients on a cereal box and I’d read it. I loved seeing Juniper and Zane’s story. They were both introduced in the previous book and I’ve been dying to know more about those two ever since. Zane and Juniper were perfect for each other and so entertaining to read about. Everly and Callum’s book is next and I can’t wait to read the final conclusion to this series
Having been introduced to this author by reading Her soul to take, I immediately clicked with her style of writing and her brilliant story lines, her characters aren't your normal heros and heroines but they are fascinating and full of depth, the chemistry between them is off the charts, the passion hotter than hell (well Zane is a demon 😉), fighting for her life and revenge for her brother, Juniper is one strong woman, a nice change from soppy weak woman who fall in insta love in so many books. I read this in one sitting as I couldn't put it down, I can't wait for the next book as I know it will be amazing.
This review contains spoilers so read with caution.
The cons 1. I was surprised to read in the end that this book has had editing. There were errors in the pages, words or maybe whole lines missing in page turning, a wrong narrator (POV) title. In general, this book is ugly looking, cover aside. It's written in Times New Roman with amateur looking paragraphs and too many exclamation points. When I pay almost 20 euros on a book I expect it to look flawless. This looks like a draft. Do better. 2. The excessive, unnecessary use of profanity. I'm no shy wallflower myself but I don't need 25 F bombs in every page to prove the character is a badass or using it to stress something. I can think of five different words to use to make the same point. 3. Some things didn't make sense. For example, I never understood why Juniper killed left and right before she made the deal with Zane. It served zero purpose in the story and made her look insane. 4. The repeating. The first spicy scene is basically a rewrite of the graveyard scene from Her Soul To Take down to the slightest detail. Zane wants, speaks, behaves a lot like Leon. It feels lazy. 5. The poor dialogue and writing. I don't know what happened since the first book but the more I read this book 2, the worst the writing got. It didn't hook me like #1, I didn't picture it in my head. Instead I kept putting it down because the writing but especially the dialogues (Juniper mostly) were so silly, shallow and ...bad.
The pros 1. The spice! Masochist Zane is my new favourite thing to giggle about. That scene especially was very steamy. Loved it. I've said it in my review of HSTT that I admire Harley Laroux for her boldness in this area, although she tends to repeat herself. 2. Zane. Although he's not written like a thousand year old demon (he behaves, thinks, talks more like a young adult), he's the interesting thing in this book. He's persistent, funny, sarcastic, vicious, sexy. Juniper is an anchor dragging this book down. She gets a moment to shine near the very end but for the most part, I found her extremely annoying and immature for a tortured soul.
I'm disappointed. I spent so much money and read something I could've written in junior high school myself. Maybe because this serves a bit like a prequel to Her Soul To Take and we know where it's going, maybe the characters needed more elements so they can grip you, maybe the publishing of the book was rushed, I don't know. But I defended Harley Laroux's writing in my review of HSTT and now I have to bash it. There's only so far a couple of explicit sex scenes can take a book. I will buy the third book because Everly's story sounds interesting but I will surely not spend as much. Kindle it is.
