5.0 out of 5 starsTotally biased review because I enjoy their writing so much I devoured this in a state of ridiculous happiness!
Reviewed in Australia on 26 November 2021
I’m not even going to PRETEND to be unbiased here because I bloody love @ilona_andrews books and I absolutely devoured this next installment in the Kinsmen universe!

⚔️Synopsis (Goodreads):
An uneasy alliance between warring families gets heated in this otherworldly novella from bestselling author Ilona Andrews.

At first glance, the planet Rada seems like a lush paradise. But the ruling families, all boasting genetically enhanced abilities, are in constant competition for power—and none more so than the Adlers and the Baenas. For generations, the powerful families have pushed and pulled each other in a dance for dominance.

Until a catastrophic betrayal from within changes everything.

Now, deadly, disciplined, and solitary leaders Ramona Adler and Matias Baena must put aside their enmity and work together in secret to prevent sinister forces from exploiting universe-altering technology.
⚔️

Enemies to friends/lovers? Deadly and determined and not apologetic for it? Suave and old school honourable about things that are Just Not Done? Fancy tech and special abilities?

COME AT ME 😍😍😍

As with all the other books in this universe the relationships and interactions between the two MCs was mature, funny and the burn between the two was just *chef’s kiss* perfect. I loved their banter so much, especially when it’s them against enemies. It’s an indelible part of all of IA’s books and it’s brilliant.

One thing though: while it isn’t strictly necessary to read the first two books to understand this (and it’d still be enjoyable!) I highly recommend it so you fully understand what Kinsmen society and world is like.

Fated Blades was a very satisfying read, especially for a novella - often with novellas, I find the storyline doesn’t quite give me enough, but that wasn’t the case at all with Ramona & Matias. Could I read more on this couple? - definitely, but I wasn’t left wanting at the end. Now I’m off to listen to the audio 🎧

Loved it but it was predictable. On the Andrews scale it is probably a five but that doesn't mean you can put it down. Thoroughly entertaining.

Too much interwoven ideas complicated the first few part of the book. Trying to make the kinsman world real became too much info to wade through at some points. The rest of the book felt a lil rushed in comparison. But hood all the same. Will always be a fan.

Another good story by the Ilona Andrews team. Beautiful magical people throwing down and having a fun dangerous adventure. Who knew cutting people in half could be a good time?

Disloyalty can destroy marriages, and sometimes it can open unexpected doors. I really enjoyed this author’s twists and turns. I hope you do to.

4.0 out of 5 stars Enjoyable read, but similar to many other books from these authors

It was a fun book, and I will read other books from these authors. That being said, their stories all seem the same to me. Two hyper-competent good people go through the expected romantic clash and then fall in love. In many cases, like this one, they are soul mates--a trope which I find completely irritating. (See Tim Minchen, "If I didn't Have You" for a great commentary.) The protagonists are Mary Sues and Marty Sues to ludicrous degree--best duelists on the planet, best corporate leaders, and also best research scientists. They are probably great cooks. Doesn't anyone specialize anymore?

I would like to see the authors stretch themselves rather than return to the same old romantic tropes time and time again. I guess the recipe sells books.

4.0 out of 5 stars all the Andrews fun guns, romance, family strife-- just felt a little short and undeveloped

I'm a die-hard Andrews fan, so I'm primed to like most anything they produce. That said, I like the Hidden Legacy series a bit more than this one. I don't know, it feels kind of less invested in if you know what I mean?

There's still a kick-butt heroine, a steely and determined hero, lots and lots of lascivious descriptions of firearms, gunships, battle strategy, etc. you would expect from Andrews, but the novel itself feels very short. There's several points where the hero or the heroine just up and tell each other their secrets without too much fuss that would have been much more drawn out to better emotional impact were this Kate Daniels or Hidden Legacy.

Still. Such coolness. A planet with a stratified society where some wield power weapons out of their forearms? A hidden temple in a rain forest? Really terrible awfully bad villains actually named "Vandals" you can totally root for to be destroyed?

The emotional contract and release of two people literally made for each other but who are Hatfield/McCoy opposite sides of generational conflict?

So much fun. You don't need to read the other books in the series to enjoy this one. It felt very much like a one-off.

Another great story in the Kinsman universe. I do enjoy visiting Dahlia provence. Another set of new talents to learn about, and we get to see more facets of both the planet that the stories take place in and the planetary system they occur in. I did like venturing into the political side of things, which is someplace we hadn't seen before.

The characters are delightful, the plot was overall good. Given this is a novella of course things aren't as fleshed out as I'd prefer them to be, but that was expected and was something seen in the previous stories as well.

The only thing that bothered me is that there were a few things mentioned about the beginning of the feud between the two families that get mentioned and then never brought up again. There was one thing in particular that should have been a much bigger deal than it got treated as and I'm honestly a bit annoyed by that.
