How are ratings calculated?
To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average. Instead, our system considers things like how recent a review is and if the reviewer bought the item on Amazon. It also analyses reviews to verify trustworthiness.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic Resource For Teachers and Society in General!

I am teaching computer skills classes for a small rural public school in North Carolina. The book gave me several ideas of lessons to teach students about disinformation. We started with a mini lesson on the power of memes for triggering emotional responses and sharing false information. The evidence locker linked from the book had all the materials I needed including an interactive meme game which the students loved!

The book taught me that we need to train a #digitaldetectivesquad that recognizes when things like memes and a variety of social media posts triggers emotions. The books outlines in detail many strategies for navigating and recognizing those feelings. Readers are challenged to ask thought provoking questions that help us determine credibility clues.

As the book states “Big tech isn't going to save us. We have to save ourselves.” And this is some of the most important work we must do as a society. “Developing Digital Detectives is a must have book for teachers but really anyone who wants to be part of the solution in combatting disinformation and finding truth.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great resource for ALL teachers!

We are in an age of information overload. Mis-, dis- and mal- information is being thrown at us constantly. It is hidden and often intertwined with accurate facts and truth. It is coming at us from all angles and is adding to the fractured state of our union. We can be part of the solution rather than perpetuating the problem. We can learn to accurately decipher the falsities, call them out and STOP their harmful spread. This book gives us the “know how” and the tools to identify the truth underneath all the smoke and mirrors of the internet… AND even better, it helps us prepare our students to do the same.

This is cutting-edge stuff! There is a living document (website) included with the book where the authors add additional content and you can access lesson plans among so many other wonderful things! The BEST part of this book for me is the time that it saves in preparing a lesson especially one that needs a web-based story that is appropriate for students and is not about anything political. That can be so difficult to find on your own. Seriously a must-have resource if you're teaching digital literacy in any school.

While I hesitate to call anything related to technology "timeless" I can confidently say LaGarde and Hudgins have created something I will be able to use with students for years to come! The way they breakdown and explain their Four Lenses mean they can easily be taught and understood by students from 4th-12th grade and the companion lessons mean I don't have to reinvent the wheel to teach my students how to use them in real life. And while the bulk of the included lessons are geared towards 4th-12th grade, there are even ideas for how to incorporate pre-digital detective skills into my work with the primary grades. Best of all, there is an online repository of lessons, activities and materials that can be accessed and added to by teachers and librarians.

This was meant to be a gift, and while it is still functional, as I turned the page to check the quality it started pulling more away from the binding. I’m worried other pages might do the same.
