Still not sure how much suspension of disbelief is necessary here. Is it possible that a successful doctor can be a serial abuser yet so successful a gaslighter that the women involved (daughters and wives) are unaware of it? Whatever. The plot romps on at a mile a minute as these quirky and dysfunctional characters slide over the waterfall of death only to find themselves saner and wiser in the refreshing plunge pool of life. There’s kleptomania, eating and baking your way past teenage rape, pension fraud, toddlers refusing to eat with hands, a barrister mis-investing $2m with dire results, psychologists, a murderous dad in prison, Alzheimer’s etc. What’s not to like? I highlighted a couple of wise remarks about the role of fathers in a child’s life.

I must be in book slump or a bad mood because nothing much is grabbing me lately. This books opens with the wedding. Stephen Aston (60 something respected surgeon) is marrying 34 year old Heather Wisher. Stephen’s two daughters, both older than his new wife are bridesmaids. Natalie (Tully 37) is a neurotic kleptomaniac and Rachel (35 years old) has never had a relationship. With anybody. And soothes her insecurities by cooking, baking and eating. Something bad happened to her when she was 16 (no prizes for guessing) and that was that! Heather herself is desperately trying to move on from her dysfunctional childhood. Trying too hard I thought. And what 34 year old, woman or man, doesn’t how how to cook a steak?

Also present at the wedding is Stephen’s former wife, Pamela whom he recently divorced and who is in a nursing home with early onset Alzheimer’s disease. Um - who invites their addled ex to their wedding? And she embarrasses herself. Anyway, as the bridal party and the celebrant move into the sacristy to sign the register to formalise the wedding, Pamela sneaks in clutching a candle stick. A scream is heard, pandemonium ensues and an ambulance is called. Something serious has occurred!

We then go back a year to the restaurant dinner where Stephen announces the engagement to his daughters before the divorce is even started. Awkward!

Eventually we learn that Stephen has been keeping a secret from his family. And clues start to emerge that maybe he’s not really a very nice man. But he always has such a rational explanation for everything and the women in his life are silly, hysterical, neurotic, blah blah! No, no no! Stop writing women being so naive and allowing themselves to be victims of gaslighting! And alcohol - my goodness they were practically swimming in it! Oh, and the hot water bottle filled with over $97 thousand - what was that? It was so out of left field, it was head shaking.

It was entertaining to a degree but it was also very clear where this was heading. I know a lot of people really enjoyed this but Stephen’s nice guy act was sickening and that’s all I’ll say. Many thanks to Netgalley and Hooder & Stoughton for the much appreciated arc which I reviewed voluntarily and honestly.

This little beauty was our book club pick this month.
Comments about The Younger Wife from some of the team …

* I loved it!
* Can’t wait to read more books by Sally Hepworth.
* First book I have actually finished BEFORE our monthly catch up!
* It was an enjoyable read and the characters well developed. Each having their own secrets. I liked that the new stepmother didn’t have the typical stereotype. The ending left me dangling though.
* I really enjoyed all the characters and the different relationships.
*
And then this last comment …

There’s always one!! 😂😂😂

My review:

In true Hepworth style, she’s knocked it out of the park again with The Younger Wife. It’s more of a slow burn domestic thriller that begs you to keep turning the pages to unravel an intriguing and fascinating plot!

We follow a stunning, complex and flawed cast of characters, highlighting this dysfunctional family with so many secrets! This domestic family drama centres around the patriarch who is getting married to a much younger woman and who’s ex wife is in the throws of late stage dementia and very much in the picture.

The POV’s beautifully meander around his two daughters Tully and Rachel and his soon to be new wife Heather. Cleverly plotted we follow their own personal demons and dramas as well as family dynamics, uncovering secrets as the plot thickens.

It’s fast paced and engaging and hits some hard core issues - gaslighting, infidelity, kleptomania, alcoholism, domestic violence.

A fabulous read and another I can highly recommend! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

4.0 out of 5 stars A breezy writing style, a good number of twists and interesting characters
Reviewed in Australia on 27 October 2021
Gossips, busybodies and scandalmongers ... gather ’round! Have you heard what’s going on with the Astons? Not only is patriarch Stephen Aston engaged to marry a woman who is younger than his daughters, but the rest of the family seem to be falling apart at the seams as well!

It is in this somewhat light-hearted vein that I took a drink and my copy of THE YOUNGER WIFE and sat outside in the wonderful sunshine (at least in my neighbourhood) to read from cover to cover this highly entertaining story.

It was a pleasure to read this book. Reading about each character’s idiosyncrasies and their reactions as personal and family secrets are revealed kept me engaged from start to finish. The chapters, told from various characters’ points of view, allowed us to gain insight into things that happen and also see how they might look differently to others.

This book does tackle serious issues including domestic violence, sexual assault, food addiction and, dementia just to name a few. If I had picked this book up on a day I was in a more serious frame of mind, I might have struggled with the way in which some of these issues were handled. Having said that, I think the book well encapsulates the helplessness and loss of control by characters; I was easily able to empathise with them.

Hepworth’s breezy writing style, a good number of twists and interesting characters makes THE YOUNGER WIFE a diverting read.

4.0 out of 5 stars Compelling and enjoyable
Reviewed in Australia on 16 November 2021
When I say that one thing I love about Sally Hepworth’s novels is that they are a “lighter” kind of read, I don’t mean that they lack depth. I am merely referring to the same tongue-in-cheek Aussie humour that makes a lot of Australian crime fiction such a pleasure to read. On one hand we have a mystery to sink our teeth into, on the other we are able to have a giggle here and there. Isn’t that just the perfect balance?

THE YOUNGER WIFE is all about family secrets, so if you love that theme as much as I do, you’re in for a treat. Imagine your father introducing you to his new girlfriend, soon to be wife, who is a few years younger than you. Now step it up one notch and imagine that your mother is still alive and still married to your Dad, and is in a nursing home dying from advanced Alzheimer’s. How would you feel? It’s a complex question with no right or wrong answer, but everyone will be able to relate to Rachel and Tully on some level as they grapple with their own feelings about this. But in the process of this upheaval, new family secrets are being brought out into the open, begging the question whether it really is the new wife they should be afraid of ....

I love the way Hepworth slowly twists the lens and shifts the focus so the edges of the perfect family blur slightly as the shadows come more into focus. Has everything Rachel and Tully have believed about their family been a lie? How much denial does it take to keep up the pretence of a happy marriage and family life? There are some very complex themes here, which may have been heavy handed or disturbing in other books, but which Hepworth handles with a gentle insight and care that made me feel deeply emotionally connected to the characters.

THE YOUNGER WIFE will appeal to readers who enjoy a lighter mystery that focuses more on the slow reveal of family secrets than the crime. Full of warm wisdom and tongue-in-cheek humour, it made a compelling and enjoyable read I was loathe to put down. Very enjoyable!

4 Stars

This psychological thriller earned 4 Stars from me!

SUMMARY
Although they are adults in their 30’s, Tully and Rachel are devastated about some recent changes in their family. Their mother, who is only 60 years old, has been placed in a long term care facility for dementia patients and, even though it’s only been a few months, their beloved father has started dating a new woman. When they meet her, they realize that she’s younger than they are AND he announces that they are engaged! He plans to divorce their mother, who rarely even recognizes him, and marry Heather. Yikes! Neither of the sisters are thrilled about the situation and both are quite suspicious of Heather, their soon to be stepmommy.

Rachel and Tully feel guilty, like they are being disloyal to their mother but they love their father and he is really pushing for them to accept Heather. In addition to all that drama, Rachel and Tully have troubles of their own. When helping her father clear out some of her mothers things, Rachel finds something within her mothers possessions that make her begin to question everything. As she searches for answers, she finds way more than she bargained for, in fact, it seems no one really being honest about their pasts or their intentions.

WHAT I LOVED
I loved a lot about this book. It had me questioning everything!! The ending was not at all what I was expecting. I loved the characters, they were so well written.

WHAT I DIDN’T LOVE
There wasn’t a lot to not love but there was a romantic aspect I found a little cliché. It wasn’t terrible and I kind of was happy about the romance but it seemed a little too much like a rom-com.

OVERALL
I very much enjoyed this book and highly recommend it to my GR friends who enjoy a good psychological thriller. NOTE; there are a few triggers including abuse and rape. People who are sensitive to those triggers should proceed with caution.

APRIL 2022 - 4 STARS.

Stephen Aston is getting married again to Heather. The only problem is he’s still married to his first wife, even though she’s in a care facility for dementia. Tully and Rachel, his daughters, look upon Heather as nothing but an interloper. They are determined to get to the truth about their family’s secrets. Will getting to the truth unleash the most dangerous impulses in all of them?

Previous books by this author were The Good Sister (‘21 - 5 Stars), The Mother-in-law (‘19 - 4 Stars) and The Family Next Door (‘18 - 4 Stars). Loved the smooth flow of the book. Enjoyed the 3 main characters finding their solutions in life, no matter the consequences

This book was definitely engaging. It only took me about 2 days to get through it! Having said that, I’m not sure how I feel about the premise of the book. It’s hard to explain without spoilers, but I feel like it was a little too unbelievable. In the end I do recommend it as a great thriller. You bounce back and forth as to what to believe or not. The characters are interesting and their stories are worth the read!
