Still not sure how much suspension of disbelief is necessary here. Is it possible that a successful doctor can be a serial abuser yet so successful a gaslighter that the women involved (daughters and wives) are unaware of it? Whatever. The plot romps on at a mile a minute as these quirky and dysfunctional characters slide over the waterfall of death only to find themselves saner and wiser in the refreshing plunge pool of life. There’s kleptomania, eating and baking your way past teenage rape, pension fraud, toddlers refusing to eat with hands, a barrister mis-investing $2m with dire results, psychologists, a murderous dad in prison, Alzheimer’s etc. What’s not to like? I highlighted a couple of wise remarks about the role of fathers in a child’s life.

3.0 out of 5 starsLighthearted fun
Reviewed in Australia on 10 April 2022
I must be in book slump or a bad mood because nothing much is grabbing me lately. This books opens with the wedding. Stephen Aston (60 something respected surgeon) is marrying 34 year old Heather Wisher. Stephen’s two daughters, both older than his new wife are bridesmaids. Natalie (Tully 37) is a neurotic kleptomaniac and Rachel (35 years old) has never had a relationship. With anybody. And soothes her insecurities by cooking, baking and eating. Something bad happened to her when she was 16 (no prizes for guessing) and that was that! Heather herself is desperately trying to move on from her dysfunctional childhood. Trying too hard I thought. And what 34 year old, woman or man, doesn’t how how to cook a steak?

Also present at the wedding is Stephen’s former wife, Pamela whom he recently divorced and who is in a nursing home with early onset Alzheimer’s disease. Um - who invites their addled ex to their wedding? And she embarrasses herself. Anyway, as the bridal party and the celebrant move into the sacristy to sign the register to formalise the wedding, Pamela sneaks in clutching a candle stick. A scream is heard, pandemonium ensues and an ambulance is called. Something serious has occurred!

We then go back a year to the restaurant dinner where Stephen announces the engagement to his daughters before the divorce is even started. Awkward!

Eventually we learn that Stephen has been keeping a secret from his family. And clues start to emerge that maybe he’s not really a very nice man. But he always has such a rational explanation for everything and the women in his life are silly, hysterical, neurotic, blah blah! No, no no! Stop writing women being so naive and allowing themselves to be victims of gaslighting! And alcohol - my goodness they were practically swimming in it! Oh, and the hot water bottle filled with over $97 thousand - what was that? It was so out of left field, it was head shaking.

It was entertaining to a degree but it was also very clear where this was heading. I know a lot of people really enjoyed this but Stephen’s nice guy act was sickening and that’s all I’ll say. Many thanks to Netgalley and Hooder & Stoughton for the much appreciated arc which I reviewed voluntarily and honestly.

Sally Hepworth writes brilliant family drama and The Younger Wife is no exception. Her characters are beautifully developed and I was left wanting to know more. Where are they now and how are they going? While dealing with difficult subject matter, there was love and humour and warmth. Thoroughly recommend x

5.0 out of 5 stars Sally Hepworth always writes such compulsive stories
Reviewed in Australia on 31 October 2021
I have to admit that I did squeal with delight when this one was delivered! Sally Hepworth always writes such compulsive stories and I couldn’t wait to get started. Less than 24 hours later I had finished.it was so easy to get caught up the Ashton families dramas and need to know more. As always, it was funny, topical, emotional and addictive.

The Aston family are seriously a mess. Looking in from the outside you wouldn’t know it, but they all have their secrets and they are not little. Sisters Tully and Rachel are still coming to terms with the fact that their mother is in a care home suffering dementia when their father Stephen announces that he is divorcing Pam and marrying Heather. Not only that, but Heather is their age. This is start of the unraveling of the family. We begin the story at the wedding where a quite serious incident occurs and then we go back to see how they could possibly get there.

These poor characters really go through the ringer! Secrets from the past that they have been keeping from each other look to destroy everything that they have.

If you love be a good family/domestic drama then Sally Hepworth is your girl. Highly recommend this and all of her previous books.

5.0 out of 5 stars Sensational! I flew through this in two sittings.

Another reason why Sally has become one of my favourite authors.

Tully and Rachel are more than a little unhappy to find their father marrying a woman their own age. What's worse, is that Stephen is still married to their mother, now in a care facility with Alzheimer's disease. Heather is also worried, knowing too well that her appearance in Stephen's life may not be welcomed by his children. When the pair announce their engagement things really heat up and the tension rises. Secrets are revealed and ghosts of the past are uncovered, while the author left me questioning each of the characters.

This one had everything, with plenty of excitement throughout. It begins with a cracking start that makes you wonder what led to this build up and the story follows from there. The author has a playful humour through her stories and builds such tension with each of her characters, keeping you immersed in the story. And the hot water bottle filled with cash. This is definitely one I recommend you prioritise. Brilliant.

Thanks so much to the author and Macmillan Australia for this gifted advance review copy.

Couldn’t put this very interesting, entertaining book down! Stephen a doctor brings his new girlfriend heather are meet his daughters Tully and Rachael who are both older than she. Stephens wife Pam gas dementia and is in a home so will be very interesting to see how see is received.
It’s an interesting read into a family that appears to be living the life but secretly having there own secrets. Why has Rachael not had a boyfriend since she was 16. Why is Tully & her husband sonny acting weird about money as they gave plenty of it. Is Stephen the great doctor & person everyone thinks he is? Was Pam always clumsy or is there more to it?
Does the wedding go ahead?
So many interesting developments & stories I couldn’t put it down wanting to know!
Another great book from sally Hepworth, the only disappointing thing is now i gave to wait for a new book from her! Highly recommend.

Life is never as it seems. Well written enjoyed their story.
Families are never what we perceive, outside of the home. No one knows what goes on behind closed doors.
Intriguing tale of abuse handed down, causing harm to others by rote.

5.0 out of 5 stars Absolutely brilliant book

Sally Hepworth is an excellent writer, and has skilfully woven an absorbing tale here. The main characters are Stephen, a well respected doctor. Pamela, his very recent ex wife who has advanced dementia. Their adult daughters, Rachel and Tully. And Heather, the new wife to be, who is as young as the daughters. Every character is well written, but my favourite is Rachel, who uses cooking and eating to hide her past trauma. The story starts on Stephen and Heather’s wedding day, then flashes back over the past from various points of view. I loved reading it, it kept me guessing right till the end.

Brilliant book and character study. Read it in a day and couldn’t put it down. It’s not made up from perfect people, but shows how they can be redeemed... unless they go too far....

5.0 out of 5 stars Surprisingly good thriller

I’ll admit that when I first heard this was a story about a really young lady, young enough to be the doctor’s daughter, dating a heart surgeon while he was still married, I was put-off and disinterested.

However, much ado drove me to give this thriller a shot. With a thriller, nothing should ever be taken at face value. And THE YOUNGER WIFE’s no exception.

Stephen Aston, a well-respected and well-established heart surgeon, is getting married again. He has two daughters and a wife he must divorce first.

Pamela, the current wife, is in the advanced stages of dementia.

Tully and Rachel are the daughters.

And Heather is the newer wife.

The Prologue already got my attention and had me wondering what in the world was going on. It’s the wedding. Can’t tell who is attending the event but is deathly afraid of being discovered by the groom.

THE YOUNGER WIFE is told from three POVs (Points Of View):

Tully, the older daughter

Rachel, the younger daughter

Heather, the younger wife, who’s younger than the two daughters

The story has plenty of twists and turns. Even when I figured out what was going on, plenty kept me interested.

I give THE YOUNGER WIFE: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️✨, rounded up to 5/5.

Trigger warnings: trauma, abuse, gaslighting
