5.0 out of 5 starsShelly and West🥰🥰🥰
Reviewed in Australia on 13 November 2021
Weston and Marty have been best friends since they were kids and Marty’s sister Shelly (Rachel) has always tagged along. She has always loved West and when she is 16 West goes off to join the Army and it breaks her heart. He promises to write to her and never lose touch, but he breaks that promise. Shelly spends 7 years missing West, but does as he asked her to do, and goes to college and follows her dreams to become a historian. West is discharged from the Army but he is a broken man. His entire platoon is killed and after his discharge he goes into a very dark place with alcohol and depression. It takes a lot of years to get sober but he still regards himself as broken. When Shelly is called home when Gram needs surgery she has not seen West for seven years and when she does he is not the man she once knew. This is their story and I thoroughly enjoyed the read.

I tried, oh how I tried. But seriously? Female MC saccharine sweet and kind to elderly/animals-check; surly male MC, vet with issues-check....surprisingly I found the sex too graphic in some places and neither character were shown favourably.

2.0 out of 5 stars Stopped at 46%; pacing problems and blurry character “voices”

There is a thin mystery that motivates the protagonists to investigate and interact with each other, but it is poorly developed and lacks stakes. Who cares if the theft is solved? Why does it matter? The random clues seem like busy-ness instead of serious plot advancements. There’s not much cause-effect direct action but more contrived situations and mundane conversations.

The main characters’ voices are too similar. Without chapter POV headings, it’s difficult to know who is talking. (Other than Weston cusses more and has horn-dog thoughts.)

Secondary characters lack consistent dimension, and their dialog is frequently flat and unnatural. There is a lot of laughter in response to non-funny exchanges or awkward speech tags that make the conversations seem dorky.

The profanity is excessive, and the “G-d you” comment is especially offensive as it is said casually and way out of context. The negative verbal comments are red flags for an unhealthy, verbally abusive relationship.

The first (very graphic) sex scene is disturbing in that the two have a decade of history, but they do an almost brutal quickie in an awkward place. The cave-man, alpha domination talk mixed with profanity is a turn-off coming from a guy who supposedly cares so much about Shel he avoided her for years in order to protect her.

The mystery story development is slow-moving and tedious, and after the initial sex scene, which has some great figurative language spoiled by crude dialog, I am not compelled to finish the book. The protagonists can have each other, their ill pig, and their antique collections. Hopefully they get some therapy and learn how to treat those they love with more respect; otherwise, their toxic relationship is doomed and is a poor example to emulate.

There are lots of comma errors and some other sentence construction errors that cause the reader to stumble.

2.0 out of 5 stars In a word, wordy

I liked the teaser that Kindle provides and so I purchased the book. About a quarter of the way into the book, I started skimming. The story rambles. So many words that beat around the bush. The book has over 400 pages which need an editor's attention.
The female lead lacks good sense for someone who went to college and lives in D.C.. Good grief, she shouldn't go on a date with someone who gives off bad vibes. She shouldn't shrug off hearing an intruder in the house at night. She also doesn't consider other people's motives which I found strange for a student of history. History always has many sides.
The male lead's only apparent problem was that pesky Y chromosome getting stuck in overdrive whenever he was around his "woman" and he lost his higher brain function.
I was disappointed with the stereotyping

2.0 out of 5 stars “Is there really anything wrong with loving books?”

I really wanted to get lost in this book, but I just couldn’t do it. There wasn’t any depth to the story for me and I struggled to push through. I wanted to like West, but I couldn’t move past his “I know better than you what you need,” attitude. I felt bad for his past in the service and I have the utmost sympathy and compassion for veterans, but I just couldn’t get into his story. I didn’t really like anyone else. The intrigue of who was thieving was the most interesting part of the book, but even that was superficial at best. And I honestly spent the whole book wondering how in the world you get the nickname “Shelly” from the name “Rachel.” It just doesn’t work! As much as I wanted to like this book, I just couldn’t get here. I couldn’t even get halfway there.

2.0 out of 5 stars Weston and Rachel (Shel)

I really couldn’t get into this book. I’m really not sure why. Too wordy maybe…? There was just a lot of extra that I didn’t feel needed to be there. And the very few intimate scenes were rather cringe worthy. I don’t know, it just felt very text book like in its plot line. Rachel was too immature and didn’t have much chemistry with Weston. And the antique robbers were pretty stupid as far as robbers go! Maybe you’ll like this book, but it didn’t have enough of something for me.

2.0 out of 5 stars Not my cup of tea!

While it was a good story, I won't be reading the other books in the series, or any more books by Nicole Snow. Why? I don't enjoy all the very sexily explicit chapters. I prefer a story that lets me use my own imagination rather than have all the details spelled out in such a detailed manner. Sorry that's just my personal preference.

2.0 out of 5 stars Too much porn!

The story line was ok, just a typical romance novel. I really didn't think it was necessary to go on and on with the details of their "love making". I really don't think anyone actually talks that way even if they're really enjoying sex to that degree. I just fast forwarded through all that stuff, kind of like trying to watch an R rated movie with young teens.

I read about 20% of this book last night, and the writing was so bad that I got online today to read reviews of the book before deciding whether to read any further. Apparently, at least a few people agree with me.
It's rare that I don't finish a book that I start, but I'm not wasting any more time on this one.

2.0 out of 5 stars 100 pages too long

This. Book is fine for love struck teens. The sex is too many pages. I skimmed pages and pages. Are there any editors left. Hemingway said no book should be more tan 250 pages. I say no more than 350 making this 139 pages too long - maybe even more

2.0 out of 5 stars Awkward writing

This could have been half the length. The writing was awkward, grammatically strange and confusing. Each character over explains everything about what they’re thinking and feeling, often contradicting themselves from page to page. I wanted to like it but I could hardly finish it.
