4.0 out of 5 starsThis is not for the faint hearted.
Reviewed in Australia on 25 August 2021
Having heard that Colleen Hoover delivers some very emotional works, when I needed to use the letter V for a book challenge, this one seemed like as good a place as any to start.

Honeslty. I have no words.

In the beggining I was sceptical. Mainly because Colleen used a word that meant an alcoholic beverage to describe someone eyes matching their tie without actually giving the colour. When I read that my hope for her hype plumted.

This isn't a romance, and when I realised it wasn't, my expectation changed.

When that happened, I was able to sink myself in this book. My emotions ran high. There were times I was disgusted in what had happened, there were moments I swooned, and moments I had to put my kindle down. Time when I thought I knew exactly how it would end.

I will neither confirm or deny my suspicions, though I wasn't entirely off the mark. That in itself shows that reading Colleen Hoover was worth it. That this book was worth taking the time for.

SPOILER FREE REVIEW FOR THOSE HAVING DOUBTS

I yielded to the hype. I heard "pace, thriller, insane twists" and I thought it was true - I wont listen to the masses again.
I am the wrong audience for this book in many ways. Romance is not my bag; I also took at face value the 'thriller and 'mystery' tags and I shouldn't have.
Even removing those personal preferences from my review - this is still 'meh' at best.

The storyline had enough pace but the plot felt seriously underdeveloped and the writing quality was very Y.A except for the scenes where she talks you though a seeming unrelenting amount of bl*wjobs and while I fine with reading about sex when it works in to the story line - I guess i'm self-aware enough to not be turned on by trauma-bond sex.
I didn't realise I was reading the (exposition only) twist because I spent the entire novel waiting for the author to get to the bit where ..... *twist ending* happened.

I guess I was expecting more depth- somewhere, anywhere! Or at least for things to not to be so obvious. To me this is soft core porn, mystery written like a teen drama.

3.0 out of 5 stars Didn't quite live up to the hype for me...

3.5* rounded down.
I had expected to be completely blown away by this novel, based on the reviews and comments of others, but found that, for me at least, it didn't quite live up to the hype.
Don't get me wrong, it's a solid thriller featuring an intriguing plot idea, a series of clever literary devices and well-executed misdirection, but I felt there was an over-emphasis on virtual soft-porn (and I'm no wowser!) to the detriment of fully realised and convincing characterisations. My feeling is that, with more emphasis on the latter, this had the potential to be a superlative thriller. Disappointingly for me, it fell a bit short.

5.0 out of 5 stars This book will mess with your head in the best possible way!

This was my first ever Colleen Hoover book and I was told by a friend I simply HAD to read it. So I picked it up and started, and within the very first page, I wondered what that actual farrrrk I had got myself into!

This book messed with my head. It kept me flipping the pages faster than I could read the words! It kept me guessing until the very end and I found the hairs on my arm standing on end beside goosebumps for most of the book. This book is incredible, a book I’ve highly recommend friends read long before I’ve even finished it. A book those friends are WTF’ing just like I was. A book that will go down as one of the best books I’ve EVER read.

5 stars doesn’t do it justice, and nor does this review!

4.0 out of 5 stars A Thriller with Sex

Firstly, I've seen this on lists of romance novels... just because there's a sex relationship developed doesn't mean there's a romance. Don't come to this for the romance.

Secondly, I don't see anybody comparing this book to Jane Eyre. While not a faithful retelling, Jane Eyre comes to mind while reading this book.

This book wiĺl leave you asking 'who is sane really?' but it isn't anything to write home about. Fans of Colleen Hoover seem to love this though.

Holy… Wow. I didn’t read the blurb, didn’t read the trigger warnings (I firmly believe you should). I went into this head down not knowing what to expect and my mind is absolutely blown. I cried fat tears through most of it, it really upset me, but it was so well written that I loved it. I gripped onto every page I turned and demolished this book in mere hours. This book is a work of art, I should have expected it, being from this amazing author but I just, wow.

5.0 out of 5 stars Part romance, part psychological thriller - wickedly good. Will blow your mind!
Reviewed in Australia on 23 December 2018

This book was amazing! It marks a departure from Colleen Hoover’s usual genre of an emotional love story. It is unexpectedly part romance, part psychological thriller. Verity Crawford, a successful novelist, has been seriously injured in a car accident but the seriousness of her injuries have been kept secret from the public. Her husband, Jeremy Crawford, insists that struggling author Lowen Ashleigh write the remaining books in a successful series that Verity is unable to complete. Lowen is on the precipice of emotional and financial ruin. Her mother has recently died after a long illness and she has no projects in the pipeline, so this offer is life changing. Lowen visits the Crawford home to begin work on the novels and quickly is drawn into their world which has been more recently marred by tragedy. She discovers a hidden and unfinished autobiography of Verity’s - something never intended to see the light of day. The existence and shocking contents of the manuscript she keeps hidden from Jeremy not wanting to contribute further to his grief and also because she’s developed feelings for Jeremy. She realises that if ever Jeremy did read Verity’s autobiography there would be no way that he would ever be able to love her...

4.0 out of 5 stars Disturbing
Reviewed in Australia on 15 December 2020

Colleen Hoover is obviously a very accomplished writer with complete mastery of pace, plotting and characterisation. Here she’s pulled off a difficult trick: you think you know where this is going, but you’re pretty sure she’s going to throw a spanner in the works and disturb your expectations. She does, indeed, with the result that you’re left not knowing what the real truth is. Was it all a question of misunderstanding the writing process, a sad procession of events that could have been avoided? We get into mucky territory here, where people are asked to bear a whole lot of appalling truth, whatever that turns out to be. It’s somewhat tainting to read, but you have to admire the skill that created a story where possibly no one is really evil.

5.0 out of 5 stars Cross those genres

Why did the author cross her genres? To get to the other side of course! That was so cheesy... nothing like this book! I am a "guess the ending" kind of reader... each twist and each turn I get wild haired ideas of what might happen. Sometimes I'm right, sometimes I'm not. For the record I was WAAAY off on this ending and I'm so glad!

I won't give away anything that happens in the book other than to say I don't know what to believe anymore, take that as you will.

Colleen Hoover, your venture into the darkness has been amazing, I'm not sure if I should be thrilled or scared for you. What it does confirm is that you are far from mediocre, and I will most definitely read your shopping list on toilet paper.

4.0 out of 5 stars Damn this got me hook line and sinker! I started and finished this in a couple of hours.

Lowen is walking to a meeting with her publicist when a man is crushed by a car and she ends up covered in his blood. A kind man Senses her fear and guides her to a cafe to clean off and he offers her his shirt. They part ways and she heads to her meeting.

Her meeting is with the kind stranger from the street. Jeremy is there on behalf of his wife, who was a writer before her terrible accident with an offer Lowen the opportunity to write the next 3 books to continue the series. Lowen isn’t keen on the idea however knowing her current financial situation after her mother’s passing she takes the offer.

She stays with Jeremy, his son Crew and she finally meets Verity whom is a vegetable. Loner begins to search though her office and finds a manuscript of Verity’s autobiography and she starts reading it!

And then it all changes, I didn’t know who to trust, or what was real! I wanted to be there witnessing this all first hand. (And in that bed) much like my first Hoover novel this one hit me right at the end like a tonne of bricks. Serious gone girl vibes.
