How are ratings calculated?
To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average. Instead, our system considers things like how recent a review is and if the reviewer bought the item on Amazon. It also analyses reviews to verify trustworthiness.

The cure to the happiness trap isn't self help, it's communism.

1.0 out of 5 stars The approach does not make sense to me.

I really wanted to to like the book. I like mindfulness and have been thinking about happiness. However, the book is a big disappointment. First, the book is poorly written for my taste, wordy and too many simplistic examples. Second, I do not agree with the messages: "is this though helpful? If it is, pay attention to it. If not, defuse it." Sorry, I still have a sense of right or wrong. If I have a thought "I am useless," I would like to think a more accurate and positive way to discredit the thought. I highly recommend another book "The Optimistic Child: A Proven Program to Safeguard Children Against Depression and Build Lifelong Resilience" by Martin E. P. Seligman. That book makes more sense to me.

The book is simplistic, condescending, and annoyingly perky. It would be far better to read Shakespeare, Anthony De Mello anything, or Man's Search for Meaning.

1.0 out of 5 stars A Colossal Disappointment

I bought this book because a health columnist from a local newspaper recommended it. She said it would be helpful for people who tend to ruminate on problems. I read just a few chapters and found the suggestions ridiculous. For example, if you're thinking "I'm an idiot" or "Nobody likes me," the author advises you to just keep singing these words to yourself over and over, to the melodies of "Happy Birthday" or "Jingle Bells." This is supposed to defuse the thought and make you not care about it anymore. Likewise, the author suggests saying "I'm an idiot" or "Nobody likes me" over and over, using different funny voices. For instance, Bugs Bunny, Mickey Mouse or Homer Simpson. Seriously? Are we in kindergarten?

1.0 out of 5 stars This gets a 1 star due to the misleading description

I was looking for the illustrated version. This is not it even though the description says:
The Happiness Trap: How to Stop Struggling and Start Living: A Guide to ACT Paperback – Illustrated, June 3, 2008
Not expensive enough that I will bother returning but the whole point was the illustrations that I was recommended to enjoy.

1.0 out of 5 stars Insubstantial and unconvincing.

This is a poorly written book. It's insubstantial and unconvincing. I found myself disagreeing with many of the statements made, none of which were backed by any evidence or justification. I had hoped for more, but it's just another snake oil self-help wishy washy tract.

Save yourself the trouble and get a real book on Buddhism, not this water-down Westernized mess.
