4.0 out of 5 stars A fascinating yet disturbing read
Reviewed in Australia on 8 August 2022
Confession: I am a true crime addict! I hadn't heard of this case before and as I was reading it, if I hadn't known it was a true crime read I would have thought it was a thriller with an unbelievably ridiculous plot! The fact that this was an actual murder and that due to some pretty sub par investigative work an innocent man was initially incarcerated for the murder of his wife was beyond disturbing. To then read how the actual murderer wasn't even considered to be a suspect for such a long time was just gob smacking to me. Especially given how it is revealed that her own mother also died under suspicious circumstances. I found myself exasperatedly unable to put this book down just hoping that eventually justice would be served. A well written, informative true crime read, whilst also being a bittersweet read, in that the victim's falsely accused husband had to spend time in jail for this heinous crime. ⭐⭐⭐⭐#charlesbosworthjnr #joeljschwartz #goodreads #litsy #thestorygraph #truecrime #bookqueen #bookstagram #amazonkindle #amazonaustralia

4.0 out of 5 stars True crime - unbelievable miscarriage of justice

True crime!

I really don’t read much true crime. The last one I think I read was about 15 years ago but hey ho, it satisfied the “something different” itch. And what a story this is - a story of a monstrous travesty of justice! It’s hard to believe this is a true story. I understand it was widely covered in American media but, being from the antipodes, I had heard nothing about it.

Russ Faria returned home from his regular Tuesday game night night with friends to find his wife dead with a knife sticking out of her neck. He was shocked and horrified. He called 911. He assumed Betsy had killed herself as she had terminal cancer, had been depressed and had attempted suicide before. This assumption cost him dearly because under the blanket covering her were 55 stab wounds. The police believed Russ was trying to cover up the fact he murdered her and from then on they fitted him up for the crime, ignoring evidence that he could not have been present when she died and ignoring any possibility that another, very plausible, suspect was available. So Russ is charged with murder and eventually the case proceeds to trial.

Russ was very lucky he had such a good and staunch lawyer. Joel Schwartz saw straight away that Russ could not be guilty and believed the case would prove him right. Unfortunately Russ was saddled with a very inexperienced judge - how does a judge with no experience in criminal trials get to cut their teeth in such a high profile murder case? But worse was that the prosecutor was so convinced Russ was guilty that she twisted every bit of evidence or lack thereof to her purpose. Luckily the judge and prosecutor were so blatantly biased and plain wrong on many points of law that Schwartz had every confidence of getting a mistrial granted or, at the very least, having grounds for an appeal.

Russ was eventually exonerated but he had spent some years in jail and the real killer had gone on to kill again. It was a horrific story and you have to wonder how many people, who didn’t have such a determined lawyer, are wrongly sitting in a cell right now. This is why I am opposed to the death penalty. Mistakes do happen. Many thanks to Netgalley and Kensington Books for the much appreciated arc which I reviewed voluntarily and honestly.

I loved having a look at this case from the defence side. Omg, talk about tunnel vision to convict someone. N to think this kind of stuff happens every year. Though, I'm hoping there's only 1 pam hupp. I had seen and read others on this case, but this bk covered soo much more. From things mentioned in the court room, to the "evidence" showing up to the defense team. Bravo to however it was that passed the REAL photos etc over.
Even my son loved this bk!!

I remember this Dateline episode. I sided with the police and prosecutor cause 1) it's always the husband and 2) the police/prosecution wouldn't lie! Mind blown! I believed Russ' alibi witnesses were all lying and helping him cover up a murder. Because - see #2 - the police/prosecutor wouldn't lie, would they? But they did! In oh SO many ways. The ineptitude of the police/prosecution in this case is staggering. The sheer willful disregard of the facts in order to fit their suspect to the crime is mind boggling! What they did to Russ Faria is unforgivable. And what they've done to the public trust is immeasurable. I will never look at another murder investigation without deeply questioning police motivation and prosecution malpractice. THIS could happen to YOU! And that's scary!

Very detailed, but interesting read on the failures of police and prosecutors, and outright corruption at times in railroading an innocent man for murder.

This book is awesome! I am a trial lawyer, and I love true crime books where they get the law right. Joel Schwartz did an amazing job on this book, and is as good an author as he is a criminal defense lawyer. He never gave up fighting for his innocent client, even when the deck was stacked against him by crooked cops, a lunatic prosecutor, and a dimwitted and inexperienced judge (the first judge, not the rest). The lady who really was the murderer is as bone chilling and evil a person as you can possibly imagine—slashing her best friend with terminal breast cancer with 55 stab wounds, shoving her ailing, elederly mother off a three-story balcony to her death, and then killing a totally innocent, random dude to cover her tracks and try and pin a second murder on Russ Faria.
Thank God we have criminal defense lawyers like Joel! it is nice to see justice finally served.
Five stars!!!

It is a true story that is almost hard to believe. The storyline would have to be fiction if it was not pathetically true. A psychopathic killer, corrupt police, an incompetent judge, and an innocent man put in jail when the obvious killer could be pointed out by a teenage son of the defense attorney. Just as your rage at the ineptitude and incompetence of members of our justice system peeks, the good guy saves the day and saves the life of the framed defendant. But wait, the twists never end. Literally, the incompetence and ineptitude allows the murderer to kill again and again. Yes, this really happened! The details in the book provide quite an understanding of how the justice system does not work, yet manages to redeem itself in the end. If you liked Just Mercy, you have to read this one. Injustice happens far too frequently.

Love murder stories,so this was a natural for me. It was very well written, detailed, and so captivating! I honestly couldn't stop reading it at night, so was up til 5am a couple days! I hated Pam so much I could have reached into the pages and strangled her myself!! What a despicable thing she is. Great book.
