5.0 out of 5 starsGlad I finally read it.
Reviewed in Australia on 21 October 2019
I’ve known of Good Omens for decades. But I never got around to reading it. Having just seen the tv series and being stuck in a anonymous hotel in the dingy section of a regional Australian city, I picked up my kindle and began reading.

It’s a good natured book that’s not cynical or nasty and which likes its characters. It’s a joyful read and clever without being obnoxious about it. And it has a final paragraph that’s a perfect counterpoint to the ending of a far more dire piece of English literature.

Read it and don’t waste 27 years about it.

The Man With no Name
3.0 out of 5 starsNice writing, no substance
Reviewed in Australia on 4 April 2019
The writing is very witty and the dialogue in particular is excellent. But the running joke of good/evil heaven/hell being the same thing, while funny, isn’t funny enough. The little jabs along those lines about freedom fighters/terrorists and politicians being in the pocket of both heaven and hell are neither funny or profound. The attempts at humorous moralism over the pollution, war and the environment are neither funny nor profound. Some characters are quite good, particularly the Crowley and Aziraphale. But I think there have just been too many crammed in to ensure both the coherence of the narrative and good characterisation.

Bibliophilia Eclectica
5.0 out of 5 stars One of my favourite books of all time. Of. All. Time.

A charming, funny story about the end of the world and the demon and angel who work together to prevent it. There are so many enjoyable things about this book. There's some inspired silliness, there is some philosophical perspective, there are a lot of quotable concepts (my husband and I often joke about "Best of Queen" and I can't hear the line in "Bohemian Rhapsody" about how "Beelzebub has a devil put aside for me, for me, for meeeeeee..." without thinking of this book, just as one example).

I re-read this book every few years and have done since about 1993.

5.0 out of 5 stars Just what you'd expect from 2 great writers

I've read this several times now and I still find it funny. Exactly what you'd expect after two great writers got together and created something very special. As the authors mentioned in their Intro to this book, I wont be surprised if there are copies of this floating around in the Vatican too.

The apocalypse will never be the same again.

Fractal
5.0 out of 5 stars A Clever, Funny and Enjoyable Read

A good but not a great read, but the concept was original and it was exactly what I would have expected from the collaboration of these two excellent but slightly quirky authors. Lots of weird and flawed characters in an engaging yet slightly zany adventure. Well worth the read.

3.0 out of 5 stars Average read with a dose of humour

Really couldn't get too enthused by Good Omens. Both authors indicated their objective was to gain a chuckle or two from each other as they compared their drafts. They failed in my case with the finished product.

4.0 out of 5 stars A delight by two of the greatest authors

Lovely mad book with an all but certain end to everything we know and love as well as hate.

So many flawed wonderful people, angels, demons, witches witch hunters and more. If you like either of the authors you’ll delight in reading this.

A nice afterward where each of them rave about the other. A
So worth reading!

I loved every second of this book. I feel like I should have read it years ago, but am glad to have found it now. Very funny and clever. More importantly very engaging.

I never tire of this. Who could? Loved the recentTV adaptation too, which had the sense to stick to the book and was excellent in every way.

I wanted to read this as I enjoyed the tv show and am a fan of Pratchett's writing. I wasn't disappointed. I bought it on Kindle, and I'll be buying the physical version because it's easier to follow the footnotes that way.
